The Anchored Soul – Day 4 – Stop Comparing, Start Resting

In the King James Version, the command to “rest” may not mean what you think it means. The original Hebrew word, dāmam, literally means to be silent or still. In a world that is filled with constant noise, God invites you to turn down the volume of your life and simply be quiet before Him. This is not a call to laziness, but a deliberate surrender of your plans and anxieties into His capable hands.

Waiting is rarely easy. We often want God’s help, but we want it on our own schedule. However, this verse reminds us that God’s timing is perfect, even when it doesn’t feel it is. Patience is an active spiritual discipline where your faith is matured. While you are waiting, God is often working behind the scenes that you can’t see.

The second half of the verse warns us not to “fret”. To fret means to burn with agitation or envy, especially when we see others succeed through less than ethical means. It is tempting to look at the “prosperity of the wicked” and feel forgotten by God. But David encourages us to stop comparing our journey to theirs. Their success is temporary, but God’s promises to the faithful are eternal. Ray Comfort is known to have said: “The best of life on Earth is a glimpse of Heaven; the worst of life is a glimpse of Hell. For Christians, this present life is the closest they will come to Hell. For unbelievers, it is the closest they will come to Heaven.”

Today, identify the one area where you are most tempted to “charge ahead” or to worry about. Practice being still, even for just a few moments, and acknowledge that God is in control. What is one specific concern you can commit to the Lord today to begin your time of resting?

The Anchored Soul – Day 3 – Beyond the “What Next”

We all long for the ‘perfect peace’ mentioned in today’s verse, but for many, it feels like a distant dream. Our lives are often crowded with obstacles that bring heavy loads of worry and anxiety. But peace isn’t just the absence of trouble; it’s the presence of Christ in the midst of it. To experience it, we must be willing to clear away those obstacles that compete for our attention and make room for the stillness only Jesus can provide.

We find the solution to our anxiety not in a change of scenery, but in a change of focus. The “perfect peace” is Christ’s protection. To stay the mind is to remain steadfast, refusing to be lured into the chaotic noise of the “if only” or “what next.” When we intentionally focus on Christ’s presence, His peace encompasses our hearts. The only thing we have to do is to remove the barriers. Once removed, we simply have to remain in the One who is our peace. No condemnation or sin stands between us and our Saviour because He is our peace!

The promise of Isaiah 26:3 is not a reward for perfect behavior, but a result of a perfect reliance on the Lord. The phrase “because he trusteth in thee” reminds us that peace is the fruit of trusting God. When we stop trusting in our own ability to navigate life’s hurdles and start trusting in His power to lead us through them, the anxiety and worry begin to dissipate. This trust is our shield; it protects our minds from the weight of the world and keeps us “attached” to the only One who can bring about perfect peace.

The Anchored Soul – Day 2 – Hearing the Whisper in a Noisy World

Any parent can tell you how those two little words can be as soft as a whisper, and at times as loud as a clap of thunder. Our ultimate Parent, our Heavenly Father must have the same reaction toward us at times. The Bible is filled with claps of thunder throughout its pages. We read about the teenage boy who strikes down a giant; or the 80+ year old Daniel who was thrown into a den filled with lions; or the prostitute who courageously hid and protected two Israelite spies from her king. These accounts are there for us to meditate on so we can learn about God’s faithfulness. They are easy to understand and we can grasp the full message.

However, what about those times when God waits to get our attention with His still small voice, as He did with Elijah in 1 Kings 19:11-13? We have a spot in the very depths of our hearts, our spirit, that desires to hear the Lord and have Him fill that spot. It cannot be heard if we are busy concentrating on something, or if we are watching television. His voice can best be heard when we make a conscious effort to sit quietly, without interruption. This is virtually an act of worship because that time is strictly devoted to the Lord, waiting on Him to speak. He can speak by bringing a Bible verse to mind; or an event that He wants remedied; or a sin that He wants you to eliminate from your life. As I sit outside beneath the wide canvas of the sky, I rest in the shadow of God’s power. He fills my lungs with the breath of life and warms my face with the golden sun. In the hum of the bee and the flowing breeze, I see His meticulous hand; in the varied songs of the birds, I hear His voice. Here, in the stillness, His creation becomes a mirror reflecting His boundless love for us.

Whatever the case may be, you will not hear His still small voice if you are so busy in your daily life. You cannot know God if you are busy! You must “disengage” from the world and engage with time alone with Him. Then you can say along with David:

The Anchored Soul – Day 1 – Saul to Paul: A Journey of Transformation

Saul’s early life was marked by a relentless campaign against the Church, a past that would have led many of us to write him off entirely. But Jesus had a different plan. Through the miraculous events described in Acts 9, the man who once terrorized believers was brought face-to-face with the Truth. This transformation turned Saul the persecutor into Paul the Apostle, the prolific writer behind 48% of the New Testament’s books. It remains a powerful reminder that with God, a person’s history does not necessarily dictate their future.

The verse following Saul’s past speaks volumes. Saul’s persecution of the church caused them to go “abroad”! What did this bring about? God’s word was preached outside of Jerusalem. The Lord sometimes uses persecution to stir the embers of a fire about to go out; or possibly to give a little shove to someone to go outside their comfort zone, and share the saving power of Jesus Christ with others!

As tragic as the early persecution was, it became the fuel for God’s greater plan. The irony is striking: the very man attempting to destroy the Church became the instrument of its expansion. By transforming Saul into Paul, the Apostle to the Gentiles, God proved that no past is too broken to be used for His purposes. I praise the Lord for this miraculous change, as it opened the door for the Gospel to reach the rest of the world—including me!

The Anchored Soul Devotional Series

Psalm 112:8  His heart is established, he shall not be afraid, until he see his desire upon his enemies.

Welcome to The Anchored Soul

In a world that often feels like a restless sea, it is easy to find ourselves drifting. The currents of daily stress, the winds of unexpected change, and the waves of worry can quickly pull us away from the peace we are meant to have through Jesus Christ. But as a believer, you were never intended to be at the mercy of the tide.

The Anchored Soul is a daily invitation to stop drifting and start dwelling. True stability doesn’t come from a change in our circumstances, but from a change in our connection. When we tether our hearts to the unchanging nature of God and the “sure and stedfast” promises of His Word, we find a security that the world cannot give and certainly cannot take away.

Whether you are navigating a calm harbor today or fighting a heavy storm, remember: the anchor only works when it is dropped. Let’s take this time to drop the anchor of our hope deep into the faithfulness of Christ.

Hebrews 6:19  Which hope we have as an anchor of the soul, both sure and stedfast, and which entereth into that within the veil;

Are you ready to begin today’s walk with a heart that is fixed and unafraid?
