Jeremiah 6:16 Thus saith the LORD, Stand ye in the ways, and see, and ask for the old paths, where is the good way, and walk therein, and ye shall find rest for your souls. But they said, We will not walk therein.
From the very beginning, the human heart has harbored rebellion: the by-product of which shows that we know better than our Creator. We naturally resist direction, eager to chart our own course and wander down paths laid out by self-reliance and desires. Yet Jeremiah lays bare the tragic outcome of that defiance: when offered the timeless, proven way of God, the stubborn response of man too often remains, “We will not walk therein.” We trade the security of God’s truth for the “illusion” of independence, only to find ourselves weary, lost, and unfulfilled with a an empty hole in our heart.
God’s invitation, however, stands as an beacon of hope in the midst of our restlessness. He calls us to stop, look, and ask for the “old paths.” Those paths are the foundational truths of Scripture that have guided believers throughout the ages. The Bible is not a set of restrictive rules, but a living map overflowing with salvation on every page. Every story, commandment, and prophecy points directly to Christ’s enduring love and His ultimate plan to rescue us.
When we finally surrender our foolish pride and choose to walk in His ways, a powerful transformation occurs. We discover that true freedom isn’t found in doing our own thing, but in aligning our lives with His truth. The world promises fulfillment through selfish desires and pleasures, but only the ancient path of the Lord delivers on its promise: deep, fulfilling rest for your soul.
