The Anchored Soul – Day 24 – The Power of “Only”

There are some words in Scripture that are easy to read past. Only is one of them. It is a small word, but in Psalm 62:5, it carries enormous weight:

“My soul, wait thou only upon God…”

David was speaking to his own soul. He was reminding himself where his trust belonged. He knew something we often forget: our hearts are easily divided. We can wait on God and wait for someone else to come through. We can trust God and keep a backup plan tucked away. We can pray for His provision and quietly place our confidence in our own ability to fix the situation. We can say, “Lord, I trust You,” while our hearts are still looking around for something else to make us feel secure.

But David says, “only.”

Not God and circumstances.

Not God and people.

Not God and money.

Not God and our own plans.

God only.

That little word changes everything. “Only” means there is no second source of hope. When we wait only upon God, we are not saying that people cannot help us or that we should never make wise plans. We are recognizing that none of those things can become the ultimate source of our security. People may help, but they are not our Savior. Circumstances may improve, but they are not our hope. Opportunities may open, but they are not our provider. Our own strength may carry us for a while, but it will eventually run out. God alone is worthy of being the anchor of our souls. And David tells us why he could wait only upon God:

“For my expectation is from him.” Expectation is where we look for something to happen. It is where we place our hope for what comes next. If our expectation is in people, we will constantly wonder whether they will come through. If our expectation is in circumstances, we will have peace only when circumstances look favorable. If our expectation is in ourselves, we will live under the exhausting pressure of having to make everything work. But when our expectation is from Him, our confidence rests not in knowing what God will do, but in knowing who God is.

  • He is faithful.
  • He is unchanging.
  • He is wise.
  • He is sufficient.
  • He has never needed a backup plan.

“Only” also means we can stop dividing our trust. Perhaps that is where many of us struggle. We trust God—but we also want to know exactly how He is going to answer. We trust God—but we want a guarantee. We trust God—but we want to keep control of the outcome. We trust God—but we are already imagining what we will do if He doesn’t answer the way we hoped.

David calls his soul to something deeper. Wait only upon God. There is freedom in that kind of waiting. When God is your only hope, you no longer have to manufacture your own security. When God is your only refuge, you don’t have to run from one temporary shelter to another. When God is your only expectation, you can face an uncertain future with a certain God. The power of “only” is that it removes the competition. It brings our scattered hearts back to one place.

God.

What are you waiting on? Maybe you are waiting for an answer. Maybe you are waiting for healing, provision, direction, restoration, an opportunity, or a change in circumstances. Whatever your situation may be, ask yourself a deeper question: Am I waiting on God, or am I waiting for God to give me what I want? There is a difference. Waiting for an outcome can keep us anxious because we don’t know what will happen. But waiting only upon God allows us to rest even when we don’t know the outcome. Because our hope is no longer attached to what happens next. Our hope is attached to Him. Today, speak to your soul as David did:

“My soul, wait thou only upon God.”

Only.

Let that little word settle into your heart. You don’t have to know how He will provide. You don’t have to know when He will answer. You don’t have to understand what He is doing. You simply have to know that He is God, and He is worthy of your complete trust. Your circumstances may change. People may disappoint you. Plans may fail. Doors may close. But God remains. And when He is your only expectation, you discover that you have everything you truly need.

A Prayer for Today: Lord, show me where I have divided my trust. Forgive me for the times I have said I am waiting on You while secretly placing my hope in people, circumstances, money, plans, or my own ability to fix things. Today, I want to choose only You. Teach my soul to wait only upon You. When I am tempted to run ahead, help me be still. When I am tempted to fear, remind me that You are faithful. When I am tempted to take control, remind me that You hold the future. I release my backup plans, my demands, and my need to know how everything will work out. You are my rock. You are my salvation. You are my refuge. My expectation is from You—and You alone. Amen.
