A Mother’s Heart – Day 5 – Child Who Strays

This is one of those topics that will eventually wreak havoc in the Christian home. It did mine. Although we tried to raise our sons according to the Scriptures, we admit we were not perfect parents. Only God is the ultimate perfect Father! When our prodigal stopped communicating with us, I fought so many emotions! My heart was torn apart with not only grief but doubts. Did we do all we could? Did we discipline too much; not enough? Were we too strict with our rules? We made sure they went to church when the doors opened, and they went to church youth functions. I did morning devotions with them and prayed with them, hoping to instill in them a deep and abiding faith that would guide them throughout their lives. Never in my wildest dreams did I ever imagine that one of my sons would totally walk away from the faith. The other son and his wife believe that church and the Bible should not be pushed on kids; they want to leave it to their children to make a choice when they are older. That is not how they were raised, but it is how they turned out as adults, making choices that sometimes leave us bewildered, wondering where we went wrong in shaping their spirituality. There is a Bible verse that we parents have memorized and pray for it to come true in our own prodigals’ lives:

Some men and women never grow up emotionally. They mature physically but their emotional and spiritual lives are like rebellious teenagers, often reacting to situations rather than responding thoughtfully. If you have the opportunity to speak with your adult child, choose your words carefully and with intention. It is essential to remind them that you love them unconditionally and that you are always there for them should the need arise, ready to listen and support. Encourage open communication, inviting them to share their thoughts and feelings without fear of judgment. Don’t sacrifice your beliefs on their altar of unbelief; instead, stand firm and don’t compromise on your values. Do everything in love, with patience and understanding, recognizing that emotional growth can take time. If you are not able to speak to your adult child, then wholly lean on the Lord and let Him do the work! Trust in His timing and wisdom, knowing that He is capable of reaching hearts in ways that you can’t.

In my prodigal’s case, we were blamed for everything that ever went wrong in his life. His heart is now hard, and he is convinced we are his problem. But are we? A dear missionary mother who was speaking from experience told me to be careful not to believe everything he claimed we did, as it would cause us to fall into the guilt trip, and it would be hard to escape it. She was absolutely right! It was the natural progression of this mother’s broken heart, wrestling with emotions that felt insurmountable. Who did I have to thank for that guilt trap? The father of lies; the devil himself! The moment I thought back to something our son said in his departing message, pain would raise its ugly head, and the enemy used it relentlessly, twisting my perception and deepening my sorrow. Dwelling on it solved nothing; rather, it only managed to cause depression and more pain, compounding the anguish and making the journey toward healing seem distant and elusive. Each negative thought was like a weight, dragging me further into despair, pulling at the very fabric of my spirit and threatening to shatter my resolve. Yet, amid this turmoil, I began to realize that letting go was essential—not just for my peace, but perhaps even for my son’s. The Lord loves us and is tenderhearted toward our sorrows, mothers. He gives us verses that remind us of this:

My sons are adults and are responsible for their actions, no matter how they were raised! I was raised in a dysfunctional home, but I claimed responsibility for my actions and suffered the consequences without blaming my parents. This was not an easy path, as the scars of my upbringing often lingered in my mind, but I knew that personal growth required facing those challenges head-on. My oldest sister was totally different! She was not saved and handled her upbringing the same way our oldest son did, often deflecting her problems onto our parents instead of taking accountability. We must recognize the fact that our children are now adults and must come to salvation and repentance the same way we did. They have concocted the idea that there is no salvation necessary, or they simply no longer care.

What we can and should do is pray for them, for prayer is a powerful tool that connects us with God who is the only One who can solve this problem. Nothing is impossible with God! It is His will for our children to be saved and serving Him, walking in light and truth. When we pray for this, we are praying in His will, aligning our desires with His perfect plans for their lives. These are the types of prayers God loves and answers, as they reflect a deep concern for the eternal souls of our loved ones. It may not be in our timeframe, but they will be answered in ways that are often beyond our understanding, revealing His grace and timing. In every prayer, we express our trust and faith in His infinite wisdom, knowing that He hears each cry of our hearts and responds with love.

Every situation is different, but the outcome is the same, dear mother! Don’t be discouraged! Yes, it’s painful and you miss your child terribly, wishing to hear his voice again; to hug him and kiss him. It’s natural to feel this overwhelming urge to step in and take control, but interfering and trying to fix the problem will only make it worse. In these moments, we must remember that we are not alone in this journey. We must allow the Holy Spirit of the Living God to work in their lives just as He works in ours. His gentle guidance, sometimes not so gentle, is what brings about true change. When we try to intercede, thinking we are doing good, we most likely are hindering the Spirit’s work! This is a delicate balance of faith where trust is essential. We must remember that the Holy Spirit’s work is always perfect! He is God after all, with a plan that surpasses our understanding. Don’t get caught in the middle of this struggle; instead, free yourself from that responsibility. Let Him do His work! Trust that His timing and methods are far better than our own and allow your heart to be at peace as you release your worries into His capable hands.

I will share the verses below each day, so we remember Who is working behind the scenes and in our own lives. He loves you so glorify, bless and praise His Name:

I Need Help!

Cast thy burden upon the LORD, and he shall sustain thee: he shall never suffer the righteous to be moved. (Psalm 55:22)

Burdens come in different shapes and sizes. Some come in the shape of broken relationships, while others come as physical trials. Oh what a blessing this verse is when one of God’s children is going through trials. Sometimes our burdens seem to weigh us down. We born again believers have a Heavenly Father who cares for us, and desires to relieve us of our burdens. God wants us to be rid of the primary burden in all of our lives, and that is the burden of sin. Today’s graphic portrays this process beautifully! The burden of sin for all who come to salvation in Jesus was taken upon Christ at the cross. There, that burden can be set down never to be picked up again! Praise the Lord!

The God of all creation wants us to call upon Him. As I pondered this thought, I did a search in my Bible software on the phrase “upon the Lord” – what comfort and joy the search results brought to me. Let me share some of them with you:

In my distress I called upon the LORD, and cried to my God: and he did hear my voice out of his temple, and my cry did enter into his ears. (2 Sam. 22:7)

And David built there an altar unto the LORD, and offered burnt offerings and peace offerings, and called upon the LORD; and he answered him from heaven by fire upon the altar of burnt offering. (1 Chron. 21:26)

Thus the children of Israel were brought under at that time, and the children of Judah prevailed, because they relied upon the LORD God of their fathers. (2 Chron. 13:18 )

I will call upon the LORD, who is worthy to be praised: so shall I be saved from mine enemies. (Psalm 18:3)

In my distress I called upon the LORD, and cried unto my God: he heard my voice out of his temple, and my cry came before him, even into his ears. (Psalm 18:6)

For evildoers shall be cut off: but those that wait upon the LORD, they shall inherit the earth. (Psalm 37:9)

Cast thy burden upon the LORD, and he shall sustain thee: he shall never suffer the righteous to be moved. (Psalm 55:22)

Moses and Aaron among his priests, and Samuel among them that call upon his name; they called upon the LORD, and he answered them. (Psalm 99:6)

I called upon the LORD in distress: the LORD answered me, and set me in a large place. (Psalm 118:5)

Behold, as the eyes of servants look unto the hand of their masters, and as the eyes of a maiden unto the hand of her mistress; so our eyes wait upon the LORD our God, until that he have mercy upon us. (Psalm 123:2)

But they that wait upon the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint. (Isa 40:31)

And this I speak for your own profit; not that I may cast a snare upon you, but for that which is comely, and that ye may attend upon the Lord without distraction. (1 Cor. 7:35)

The Father cares for us so much, and longs to have this close relationship with us. So many take this for granted and don’t go to Him with all their cares. Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you. (1 Pet 5:7) Don’t you desire to run to a place where the Father is waiting to listen to your every word? He is not distracted by the television. He is not indifferent to your needs. He will be as close to you as you allow Him to be.

Comfort During the End Times – Day 20

Good morning, at least I pray it is for you as you read this! 😃 Have you had a rough, sleepless night? Were you awakened in the wee hours for no apparent reason? Or is there a reason? Are you worried about current events? Have you discussed your worries with the Lord? He hears us, you know.

After I heard about the school shooting in Tennessee, I was feeling the anxiety level rise within me. Is this how God wants His children to feel? Absolutely not! He provided everything we need in His Word and it’s up to us to search it out (Psalm 77:6, Proverbs 25:2) and encourage ourselves. The verses are just waiting to be found!

Psa 18:6  In my distress I called upon the LORD, and cried unto my God: he heard my voice out of his temple, and my cry came before him, even into his ears.

God does in fact hear his born-again children, Reader. He is our Abba, Father and desires to calm our hearts and give us assurance that He is in control. He knows the past, He knows the future and everything in between! (Isaiah 46:10)

The only way we are going to have peace in the midst of the madness that is going on in this world is if we keep our noses in our Bibles and get educated!

The more you are in the Word, the more peace you will have. God knows what He is doing and there is nothing that catches Him by surprise. (Psalm 18:30) The shooting in Tennessee did not catch God by surprise! The evil men of this world who are trying to take control do not catch God by surprise! These occurrences are all in God’s plans and everything is falling into place. These things will all lead to Christ returning at the end of the Tribulation to set up His Millennial Kingdom!

We can trust in God because He has seen everything from the beginning to the end. Therefore, whatever He allows in your life is because He knows the outcome! I love this hymn, “Blessed Assurance” because it helps me to see that all the events occurring in the world are culminating to the final appearance of Jesus Christ, who will establish His Kingdom on this earth!

1 Blessed assurance, Jesus is mine!
Oh, what a foretaste of glory divine!
Heir of salvation, purchase of God,
born of his Spirit, washed in his blood.

Refrain:
This is my story, this is my song,
praising my Savior all the day long.
This is my story, this is my song,
praising my Savior all the day long.

2 Perfect communion, perfect delight,
visions of rapture now burst on my sight
.
Angels descending bring from above
echoes of mercy, whispers of love. [Refrain]

3 Perfect submission, all is at rest.
I in my Savior am happy and bless’d,
watching and waiting, looking above,
filled with his goodness, lost in his love.
[Refrain]

The child of God rests safely in God’s bosom. He holds us in the palm of His hand and no one can take us out from His hand. (John 10:28) Jesus says we will never perish – it’s obvious He’s not talking about physical death here because our bodies do perish. Jesus is talking about eternal life with Him! Nothing can take this away from the child of God. It is our promise from God Himself! He never breaks a promise!

God’s way is perfect and it is up to us as His child to search for His way. When we are in the Word and obedient to it, God will provide us with strength to withstand the darts of the enemy. The Lord will also make clear the way He wants us to go! (Psalm 18:32) He wants us to remain on the solid ground of the Word and be stedfast! Don’t waver but stand on Christ, the Solid Rock!

(Heb 10:23)  Let us hold fast the profession of our faith without wavering; (for he is faithful that promised;)

Our job is to be a light to this lost and dying world. We need to give them hope as we have hope! Friend, don’t be willfully ignorant of the end times. (2 Peter 3:5) If you are not born-again, confess your sins and repent of them. The time is coming when it will be too late for you to repent. You will remember each opportunity you were given by God to be saved; you will remember each time you laughed it off and ignored it. Please Reader, repent and accept Christ into your life. (Act 16:31Rom 10:9) I want to be sure that anyone who reads the posts on this blog can know beyond a shadow of a doubt that they are going to Heaven. Have you received Christ as your Saviour? If no, your sins are not covered by His sacrificial offering of Himself. You have not been redeemed by His blood. It is no coincidence that God has placed you here for such a time as this so that you may be saved if you are not already.
