The Anchored Soul – Day 50 – Guard Your Heart, Guard Your Keyboard

It takes only a brief moment on social media to notice how quickly a conversation can turn to conflict.

People are fast to react, quick to condemn, and slow to extend grace. When everyone is shouting to be heard, noise replaces understanding, and hearts grow weary from constant division.

Tragically, this sharp tongue and hostile spirit are not found only in the world – we as Christians are often just as guilty of joining the conflict. Too often, believers trade gentleness for sarcasm, argument for love, and grace for self-righteousness in the comment sections and daily conversations. Scripture tells us directly that these things ought not so to be (James 3:10). When we allow outrage to rule our speech, we obscure the very gospel we are called to proclaim and harm the witness of Christ.

James gives us a clear pattern for our words and interactions: be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to anger. This isn’t a sign of weakness or compromise; it requires immense spiritual discipline and humility. Human anger rarely accomplishes God’s righteousness, but a spirit marked by patience and truth reflects God’s heart. When you encounter harsh words, online arguments, or divisive rhetoric today, remember that your ultimate calling is to be a peacemaker. You do not have to attend every argument you are invited to, nor do you need to strike back when challenged. By examining our own hearts first, choosing restraint over retaliation, and extending kindness over hostility, we allow the light of Christ to shine clearly through a fractured world.

The next time you see something that you feel you have to respond to, ask the Holy Spirit to show you if you really do need to respond. Most of the time, He impresses upon my heart that my contribution is not needed at that moment.

Prayer:

Lord, forgive us for the times we as believers have contributed to the anger, division, and harshness of this world. Convict our hearts when we are quick to judge or slow to extend grace. Guard my tongue and my spirit from reacting in pride or strife. Give me the wisdom to be quick to hear, slow to speak, and slow to wrath. Let my words bring healing rather than conflict, and let Your love show clearly through my life today. In Jesus’ precious name I pray, Amen.
