Profit for Prophet?

Mark 11:18 And the scribes and chief priests heard it, and sought how they might destroy him: for they feared him, because all the people was astonished at his doctrine.

It’s so disturbing to see what kind of preachers are leading people astray today! My heart aches because God’s Word has become the laughing stock of the world. Unsaved people will not research the Bible to find truth. Instead, today’s world watches Reels, YouTube videos, etc. to get their “doctrine.” The Apostle Paul warned Timothy that this would be a sign of the end times:

1 Timothy 4:1 Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils;

When did it become OK for a preacher to milk his congregation, online widows, and the poor with smooth talking words about “sowing seed”? One need only do a simple Google search to find out which preachers make the most money. These so-called preachers are millionaires, just to name a few:

  • Kenneth Copeland
  • David Oyedepo
  • T.D. Jakes
  • Joel Osteen
  • Alph Lukau
  • Edir Macedo
  • Rick Warren
  • Credflo Dollar
  • Andy Stanley
  • Benny Hinn

What do all these “prophets” have in common? They preach a prosperity gospel. They take a few Bible verses, and combine them together to form a totally different gospel! They are no different than the Pharisees of Jesus’ day. They are “prophets for profit”! But what does the Bible say about riches?

Proverbs 30:7-9  Two things have I required of thee; deny me them not before I die:  (8)  Remove far from me vanity and lies: give me neither poverty nor riches; feed me with food convenient for me:  (9)  Lest I be full, and deny thee, and say, Who is the LORD? or lest I be poor, and steal, and take the name of my God in vain.

Matthew 6:19-24  Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal:  (20)  But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal:  (21)  For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.  (22)  The light of the body is the eye: if therefore thine eye be single, thy whole body shall be full of light.  (23)  But if thine eye be evil, thy whole body shall be full of darkness. If therefore the light that is in thee be darkness, how great is that darkness!  (24)  No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon.

Mark 10:17-25  And when he was gone forth into the way, there came one running, and kneeled to him, and asked him, Good Master, what shall I do that I may inherit eternal life?  (18)  And Jesus said unto him, Why callest thou me good? there is none good but one, that is, God.  (19)  Thou knowest the commandments, Do not commit adultery, Do not kill, Do not steal, Do not bear false witness, Defraud not, Honour thy father and mother.  (20)  And he answered and said unto him, Master, all these have I observed from my youth.  (21)  Then Jesus beholding him loved him, and said unto him, One thing thou lackest: go thy way, sell whatsoever thou hast, and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come, take up the cross, and follow me.  (22)  And he was sad at that saying, and went away grieved: for he had great possessions.  (23)  And Jesus looked round about, and saith unto his disciples, How hardly shall they that have riches enter into the kingdom of God!  (24)  And the disciples were astonished at his words. But Jesus answereth again, and saith unto them, Children, how hard is it for them that trust in riches to enter into the kingdom of God!  (25)  It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle, than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God.

Luke 12:13-15  And one of the company said unto him, Master, speak to my brother, that he divide the inheritance with me.  (14)  And he said unto him, Man, who made me a judge or a divider over you?  (15)  And he said unto them, Take heed, and beware of covetousness: for a man’s life consisteth not in the abundance of the things which he possesseth.

1 Timothy 6:3-5  If any man teach otherwise, and consent not to wholesome words, even the words of our Lord Jesus Christ, and to the doctrine which is according to godliness;  (4)  He is proud, knowing nothing, but doting about questions and strifes of words, whereof cometh envy, strife, railings, evil surmisings,  (5)  Perverse disputings of men of corrupt minds, and destitute of the truth, supposing that gain is godliness: from such withdraw thyself.

What is the point of the Gospel of Jesus Christ? Is it not to bring the lost to repentance and salvation? The oiliness and slickness of preachers pushing prosperity is not at all what the Bible teaches. Be careful who you follow! Let the Bible be your guide to knowledge.
