BARAK OBAMA & THE UN’s DRIVE FOR GLOBAL GOVERNANCE

BARAK OBAMA & THE UN’s DRIVE FOR GLOBAL GOVERNANCE

Senator Barack Obama has introduced a dangerous bill and it’s on the fast track to Senate passage, probably because of his high profile position as the expected Democrat presidential nominee. Obama hasn’t done much legislatively in his freshman Senate term, but this one is very telling about what we can expect from a President Obama.

The bill is the “Global Poverty Act” (S.2433) and is not just a compassionate bit of fluff that Obama dreamed up to help the poor of the world. This bill is directly tied to the United Nations and serves as little more than a shakedown of American taxpayers in a massive wealth redistribution scheme. In fact, if passed, The Global Poverty Act will provide the United Nations with 0.7% of the United States gross national product. Estimates are that it will add up to at least $845 billion of taxpayer money for welfare to third world countries, in addition to the $300 billion Americans spent for the same thing in 2006.

The situation is urgent because the Global Poverty Act has already passed the House of Representatives by a unanimous voice vote on September 25, 2007. The senate version has been passed out of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee by unanimous consent and ready for a full Senate vote.

Of course the United States has had an ongoing program of supplying foreign aid and assistance to the poor for decades. And the U.S. pays most of the bills at the UN for its herd of programs. So what’s new about Obama’s bill, and why is it dangerous?

Some history that led up to the Global Poverty Act. In 1999 and 2000 non-governmental organizations, NGOs held numerous meetings around the world to write what became known as the Charter for Global Democracy. The document was prepared to be a blueprint for achieving global governance. In reality it was a charter for the abolition of individual freedom, national sovereignty and limited government.

The Charter for Global Democracy outlined its goals in 12 detailed “principles”:

Principle One called for the consolidation of all international agencies under the direct authority of the UN.

Principle Two called for UN regulation of all transnational corporations and financial institutions, requiring an “international code of conduct” concerning the environment and labor standards.

Principle Three explored various schemes to create independent revenue sources for the UN – meaning UN taxes including fees on all international monetary transactions, taxes on aircraft flights in the skies, and on shipping fuels, and licensing of what the UN called the “global commons,” meaning use of air, water and natural resources. The Law of the Sea Treaty fits this category.

Obama on Abortion!

Source: http://www.worldnetdaily.com/index.php?fa=PAGE.view&pageId=69085

The Christian Defense Coalition today launched a campaign to publicize Sen. Barack Obama‘s position on abortion, pointing to a commentary in the Washington Post describing his stance as “extreme.”

“He opposed the ban on partial-birth abortion – a practice a fellow Democrat, the late Daniel Patrick Moynihan, once called ‘too close to infanticide,” wrote former Bush speechwriter Michael Gerson, now a Post columnist. “Obama strongly criticized the Supreme Court decision upholding the partial-birth ban. In the Illinois state Senate, he opposed a bill similar to the Born-Alive Infants Protection Act, which prevents the killing of infants mistakenly left alive by abortion. And now Obama has oddly claimed that he would not want his daughters to be ‘punished with a baby‘ because of a crisis pregnancy — hardly a welcoming attitude toward new life.”

Yet, Obama often refers to his Christian faith and appeals to young evangelicals for support.

That combination was too much for Rev. Patrick J. Mahoney, director of the Christian Defense Coalition.

“Senator Obama talks about bringing hope, faith and change to American politics. We now see this is all just political ‘doublespeak.’ One of his top priorities as president would be protecting abortion rights and even expanding them. If elected, Senator Obama would become ‘The Abortion President,’ with the most extremist policies on abortion of any president in history,” Mahoney said. “Senator Obama’s views on abortion are so radical that he even wants American citizens to pay for them. This would include Catholics, evangelicals and all people of faith. He would also expand abortion rights through his passionate support of The Freedom of Choice Act.”

The coalition is publicizing Obama’s abortion support through advertising that uses an image of Obama’s face imposed on Uncle Sam, with the words: “I want YOU to pay for abortions.”

Kaitlin Clare, a spokeswoman with the coalition, told WND the graphic will be used on handouts the organization is preparing to distribute at the Democratic National Convention in August in Denver.

“It’s not meant to attack, but just to get the word out he is very liberal on abortion, probably one of the most pro-abortion senators in the U.S. Senate. We’re trying to inform people of that,” she told WND.

“He’s reaching out to young evangelicals and wants change. He claims to be for social justice. You can’t do all those things and be for killing innocent children,” she said.

Clare said Obama’s nationalized health care plan would include abortion among the treatments available for patients who are sick, and that would force Christians with moral objections to the destruction of the unborn to pay for that very act.

Mahoney said, “The Christian Defense Coalition will be working diligently over the next five months before the November elections to educate people of faith, especially Catholics, that Barack Obama wants them to pay for abortions. This is not a candidate who is concerned about social justice, hope and equality. Rather, this is candidate who will continue the violence and pain of abortion and refuse to end this tragic war against America’s women and children.”

The Obama campaign responded to the publicity effort with an attack on the message itself.

“Barack Obama understands that the best way to reduce the need for abortions is to reduce the number of unintended pregnancies. He is committed to commonsense solutions to achieve that objective and to changing the tone of the discourse which for too long has devolved into false and negative attacks such as this that do nothing to accomplish that goal,” said campaign spokesman Hari Sevugan in a prepared statement.

Mahoney’s announcement called for Obama to “embrace a Christian faith which supports and affirms justice and human rights and works to end the tragic violence and suffering of abortion.”

“The question must be asked, how can one support faith and values while embracing policies that brutalize children and wound women? Senator Obama cannot talk with integrity about his faith and social justice anymore than a segregationist or racist can talk about their faith, justice or equality with integrity,” Mahoney said.

“Throughout the Gospels, Christ taught us to stand for the most defenselessness, needy and broken in our society. Senator Obama betrays those sacred principles through his radical pro-abortion position,” he said.

Michelle Obama Confirms Obama’s Support of Homosexual Agenda

How can the Obamas call themselves Christians and yet support the gay agenda? Something is wrong with that picture. Some say that Obama is a sheep in wolves clothing. This shows me that he is a WOLF in wolves clothing! There is nothing Christian about someone who will support legislation that will allow sin like this to be legalized. The homosexuals cannot reproduce after their own kind so they prey on the young people of today. If Obama gets into office, our country is surely done for. A Republican Presidency has minimized the strength of a Democractic Congress. But people, once a Democratic Presidency sets in, the United States will no longer stand a chance. The Lord will judge this nation or He will have to apologize to Sodom and Gomorrah!

Source: http://www.onenewsnow.com/Election2008/Default.aspx?id=157362

NEW YORK – Michelle Obama told the Democratic Party’s Gay and Lesbian leadership Council Thursday night that her husband will repeal federal policies that she says limit the rights of homosexuals.

An ABC News report on the event says Mrs. Obama stated that “Barack believes that we must fight for a world as it should be.” She said that world would be a place where, what she called, ” discriminatory laws” like the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) will be repealed. DOMA gives states the right to reject homosexual “marriages,” even when such unions are performed in states like Massachusetts and California where they have been legalized.

According to the ABC report, Michelle Obama went on to quote her husband as saying “the federal government should not stand in the way of states that want to decide for themselves how best to pursue equality for gay and lesbian couples, whether that means a domestic partnershp, a civil union, or a civil marriage.”

Another report says people paid anywhere from $1,500 to more than $28,000 for tickets to attend last night’s Democratic Party fundraiser at the Waldorf-Astoria.

Was Jesus Christ a Racist?

Jesus Christ, Himself a Jew, brought salvation according to the prophecies of the Old Testament. His salvation did not just come to the Jews but to all men. There are no verses to be found in God’s Word to say that only a certain race of people can be saved. We all came from Adam and Eve, my friend. We are all God’s creation. Therefore, how can bigots say they are the one true race – the better race – the ones that God chose? How can these comments be proven? Only the Word of God, the Holy Bible, contains our answers.

~Titus 2:11 For the grace of God that bringeth salvation hath appeared to all men,

~John 3:15 That whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have eternal life.

~John 3:16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

~John 11:26 And whosoever liveth and believeth in me shall never die. Believest thou this?

~John 12:46 I am come a light into the world, that whosoever believeth on me should not abide in darkness.

~Acts 10:43 To him give all the prophets witness, that through his name whosoever believeth in him shall receive remission of sins.

~Romans 9:33 As it is written, Behold, I lay in Sion a stumblingstone and rock of offence: and whosoever believeth on him shall not be ashamed.

~Romans 10:11 For the scripture saith, Whosoever believeth on him shall not be ashamed.

~1 John 5:1 Whosoever believeth that Jesus is the Christ is born of God: and every one that loveth him that begat loveth him also that is begotten of him.

Just who is covered under the word whosoever?

~Romans 1:16 For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.

~Romans 10:12 For there is no difference between the Jew and the Greek: for the same Lord over all is rich unto all that call upon him.

~Galatians 3:28 There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither bond nor free, there is neither male nor female: for ye are all one in Christ Jesus.

~Colossians 3:11 Where there is neither Greek nor Jew, circumcision nor uncircumcision, Barbarian, Scythian, bond nor free: but Christ is all, and in all.

The reference to Greek here means anyone who is not Jewish; also referred to as a Gentile. The point of the matter is that Jesus did not discriminate. He died for all!

Why then does the world view itself in different shades of color? Why does it exist even amongst so-called Christians? The fact of the matter is that the true born-again believer, who is in the Word of God, will see that discrimination cannot exist with God’s children. The children of God are equal in God’s eyes for He died for all of us.

Obama and his wife do not believe this way. They claim christianity yet their views are far from what Christ taught. They most definitely see color. The news is filled with what their views are on this subject. Why is this? There are no colors with Christ. There are no colors with the Gospel of Jesus Christ. I have walked into a building filled with born-again Christians who were of a different race than I, yet I was welcomed with opened arms. The same is true for the church I belong to. People of different ethnic backgrounds are members and we are all family. We worship our Saviour with unity. Color is not a barrier but a link in the chain that binds us into the family of God.

Shame on anyone who calls himself Christian and yet holds to beliefs like the Obamas! Shame on anyone who calls himself Christian and yet is a bigot and thinks himself better than anyone else!

Obama Pulls Presidential Seal!

Sen. Barack Obama has promised “change,” and his campaign has already been hard at work changing one of the basic symbols of the nation – the Presidential Seal.

On Friday, the press was abuzz over the new seal, which was unveiled on Obama’s podium when he spoke to a group of Democratic governors.

While the Obama seal does include the American bald eagle clutching arrows and an olive branch, the resemblance ends there.

The Latin phrase “E Pluribus Unum,” which translates to “Out of many, one,” now says “Vero Possumus.” Press reports translate the Latin words as “Truly, we are able” – a rough translation of the Obama campaign slogan, “Yes we can.”

The deletion of “E Pluribus Unum,” long considered the de-facto motto of the United States, is not accidental for multiculturalists, who have long denigrated the concept that immigrants must strip away their old culture in favor of the “oneness” of American civilization. In the 1990s, such activists promoted the alternative concept of the nation’s ethnic “mosaic” – rather than a single, overarching metaphor to describe American society. For example, Nation of Islam Leader Louis Farrakhan has pointedly criticized the “E Pluribus Unum” motto as not reflecting the nation’s diversity.

Other Obama changes to the seal include the removal of the shield over the eagle’s breast, representing the president’s oath to defend the Constitution. The shield has been replaced with the letter “O” – presumably for Obama – and the image of a rising sun.

“This is too serious a contest about too serious of issues for a candidate to be playing make-believe on the trail,” Brian Rogers, a spokesman for presumptive Republican nominee Sen. John McCain, told The Los Angeles Times.

The presidential primary season is finally over, and it is now time for gun owners to take a careful look at just where apparent nominee Barack Obama stands on issues related to the Second Amendment. Obama’s Not Exactly’s

1.) Selma Got Me Born – NOT EXACTLY, your parents felt safe enough to have you in 1961 – Selma had no effect on your birth, as Selma was in 1965. (Google ‘Obama Selma’ for his full March 4, 2007 speech and articles about its various untruths.)

2.) Father Was A Goat Herder – NOT EXACTLY, he was a privileged, well educated youth, who went on to work with the Kenyan Government.

3.) Father Was A Proud Freedom Fighter – NOT EXACTLY, he was part of one of the most corrupt and violent governments Kenya has ever had.

4.) My Family Has Strong Ties To African Freedom – NOT EXACTLY, your cousin Raila Odinga has created mass violence in attempting to overturn a legitimate election in 2007, in Kenya. It is the first widespread violence in decades. The current government is pro-American but Odinga wants to overthrow it and establish Muslim Sharia law. Your half-brother, Abongo Obama, is Odinga’s follower. You interrupted your New Hampshire campaigning to speak to Odinga on the phone. Check out the following link for verification of that….and for more. Obama’s cousin Odinga in Kenya ran for president and tried to get Sharia muslim law in place there. When Odinga lost the elections, his followers burned Christians’ homes and then burned men, women and children alive in a Christian church where they took shelter.. Obama SUPPORTED his cousin before the election process here started. Google Obama and Odinga and see what you get. No one wants to know the truth.

5.) My Grandmother Has Always Been A Christian – NOT EXACTLY, she does her daily Salat prayers at 5am according to her own interviews. Not to mention, Christianity wouldn’t allow her to have been one of 14 wives to one man.

6.) My Name is African Swahili – NOT EXACTLY, your name is Arabic and ‘Baraka’ (from which Barack came) means ‘blessed’ in that language. Hussein is also Arabic and so is Obama. Barack Hussein Obama is not half black. If elected, he would be the first Arab-American President, not the first black President. Barack Hussein Obama is 50% Caucasian from his mother’s side and 43. 75% Arabic and 6.25% African Negro from his father’s side. While Barack Hussein Obama’s father was from Kenya, his father’s family was mainly Arabs.. Barack Hussein Obama’s father was only 12.5% African Negro and 87.5% Arab (his father’s birth certificate even states he’s Arab, not African Negro). From….and for more….go to…..

7.) I Never Practiced Islam – NOT EXACTLY, you practiced it daily at school, where you were registered as a Muslim and kept that faith for 31 years, until your wife made you change, so you could run for office. 4-3-08 Article “Obama was ‘quite religious in islam’:

8.) My School In Indonesia Was Christian – NOT EXACTLY, you were registered as Muslim there and got in trouble in Koranic Studies for making faces (check your own book). February 28, 2008. Kristoff from the New York Times a year ago: Mr. Obama recalled the opening lines of the Arabic call to prayer, reciting them with a first-rate accent. In a remark that seemed delightfully uncalculated (it’ll give Alabama voters heart attacks), Mr. Obama described the call to prayer as “one of the prettiest sounds on Earth at sunset.” This is just one example of what Pamela is talking about when she says “Obama’s narrative is being altered, enhanced and manipulated to whitewash troubling facts.”

9.) I Was Fluent In Indonesian – NOT EXACTLY, not one teacher says you could speak the language.

10.) Because I Lived In Indonesia, I Have More Foreign Experience – NOT EXACTLY, you were there from the ages of 6 to 10, and couldn’t even speak the language. What did you learn, how to study the Koran and watch cartoons.

11.) I Am Stronger On Foreign Affairs – NOT EXACTLY, except for Africa (surprise) and the Middle East (bigger surprise), you have never been anywhere else on the planet and thus have NO experience with our closest allies.

12.) I Blame My Early Drug Use On Ethnic Confusion – NOT EXACTLY, you were quite content in high school to be Barry Obama, no mention of Kenya and no mention of struggle to identify – your classmates said you were just fine.

13.) An Ebony Article Moved Me To Run For Office – NOT EXACTLY, Ebony has yet to find the article you mention in your book. It doesn’t, and never did, exist.

14.) A Life Magazine Article Changed My Outlook On Life – NOT EXACTLY, Life has yet to find the article you mention in your book. It doesn’t, and never did, exist.

15.) I Won’t Run On A National Ticket In ’08 – NOT EXACTLY, here you are, despite saying, live on TV, that you would not have enough experience by then, and you are all about having experience first.

16.) Voting “Present” is Common In Illinois Senate – NOT EXACTLY, they are common for YOU, but not many others have 130 NO VOTES.

17.) Oops, I Misvoted – NOT EXACTLY, only when caught by church groups and Democrats, did you beg to change your misvote.

18.) I Was a Professor Of Law – NOT EXACTLY, you were a senior lecturer ON LEAVE.

19.) I Was a Constitutional Lawyer – NOT EXACTLY, you were a senior lecturer ON LEAVE.

20.) Without Me, There Would Be No Ethics Bill – NOT EXACTLY, you didn’t write it, introduce it, change it, or create it.

21.) The Ethics Bill Was Hard To Pass – NOT EXACTLY, it took just 14 days from start to finish.

22.) I Wrote A Tough Nuclear Bill – NOT EXACTLY, your bill was rejected by your own party for its pandering and lack of all regulation – mainly because of your Nuclear donor, Exelon, from which David Axelrod came.

23.) I Have Released My State Records – NOT EXACTLY, as of March, 2008, state bills you sponsored or voted for have yet to be released, exposing all the special interests pork hidden within.

24.) I Took On The Asbestos Altgeld Gardens Mess – NOT EXACTLY, you were part of a large group of people who remedied Altgeld Gardens. You failed to mention anyone else but yourself, in your books.

25.) My Economics Bill Will Help America – NOT EXACTLY, your 111 economic policies were just combined into a proposal which lost 99-0, and even YOU voted against your own bill.

26.) I Have Been A Bold Leader In Illinois – NOT EXACTLY, even your own supporters claim to have not seen BOLD action on your part.

27.) I Passed 26 Of My Own Bills In One Year – NOT EXACTLY, they were not YOUR bills, but rather handed to you, after their creation by a fellow Senator, to assist you in a future bid for higher office.

28.) No One On My Campaign Contacted Canada About NAFTA – NOT EXACTLY, the Candian Government issued the names and a memo of the conversation your campaign had with them.

29.) I Am Tough On Terrorism – NOT EXACTLY, you missed the Iran Resolution vote on terrorism and your good friend Ali Abunimah supports the destruction off Israel.

30.) I Want All Votes To Count – NOT EXACTLY, you said let the delegates decide.

31.) I Want Americans To Decide – NOT EXACTLY, you prefer caucuses that limit the vote, confuse the voters, force a public vote, and only operate during small windows of time.

32.) I passed 900 Bills in the State Senate – NOT EXACTLY, you passed 26, most of which you didn’t write yourself.

33.) I Believe In Fairness, Not Tactics – NOT EXACTLY, you used tactics to eliminate Alice Palmer from running against you.

Obama’s Call for Repealing Defense of Marriage Act!

Obama Pledges To Fulfill Prophecy, Turn US Into Sodom & Gomorrah, Repeal
Defense Of Marriage Act, Legalizing Gay Marriage Nationwide
*
Dem Senators Divided on Obama’s Call for Repealing Defense of Marriage Act*
*
By Josiah Ryan
CNSNews.com Staff Writer
May 21, 2008

On the Spot (CNSNews.com) – A sampling of Senate Democrats expressed
sharply divergent views yesterday on whether they would support Sen.
Barack Obama’s (D-Ill.) call to “fully repeal” the Defense of Marriage
Act (DOMA), which in the wake of this week’s California Supreme Court
decision legalizing same-sex marriage as well as a similar 2003 decision
by the high court of Massachusetts, would have the effect of legalizing
same-sex marriage nationwide.

Sen. Diane Feinstein (D-Calif.) said she would support Obama’s position,
while Sens. Ben Nelson (D-Neb.) and Thomas Carper (D-Del.) said they
would not. Sen. Barbara Boxer (D-Calif.) expressed surprise that Obama
had taken a position in favor of full repeal of DOMA.

The Defense of Marriage Act, signed into law by President Clinton in
1996, protects states from having to recognize same-sex marriages
contracted in other states. Ordinarily, under the “Full Faith and Credit
Clause” of the Constitution, states are required to recognize “the
public Acts, Records and judicial Proceedings of every other State.”

“Obama also believes we need to fully repeal the Defense of Marriage Act
and enact legislation that would ensure that the 1,100+ federal legal
rights and benefits currently provided on the basis of marital status
are extended to same-sex couples in civil unions and other legally
recognized unions,” his campaign Web site says.

Obama has emerged as the likely Democratic presidential nominee, and
California has become the second state where the local Supreme Court has
decreed a right to same-sex marriage.

When Cybercast News Service asked Sen. Ben Nelson (D-Neb.), who has been
a vocal supporter of the Obama campaign, if he could support Obama in an
attempt to repeal DOMA, Nelson said that he could not. “No. I support
the Defense of Marriage Act, period,” he said.

Sen. Thomas Carper (D-Del.) also told Cybercast News Service that he
would not support the repeal of DOMA. “I don’t believe so,” he said.
“When I was governor of my state, we passed our own Defense of Marriage
Act, which essentially said that while we respect the civil unions of
those of the same sex, we believe that marriage is something that occurs
and should occur between a man and a woman. That’s the law we adopted
when I was governor, and I am not anxious to see that pushed aside.”

Sen. Barbara Boxer (D-Calif.), who is from one of the two states where
same-sex marriage has been declared a right, told Cybercast News Service
that she was not aware of Obama’s call to repeal DOMA. “I have not
talked to Sen. Obama about that. I have not heard anything about that,”
she said. “I did not vote for DOMA in the first place. I voted against
it, and I don’t know anything about this.”

Boxer also asked Cybercast News Service to provide her staff with proof
that Obama holds this position. “I would like to see it,” she said. “I
would be very interested in seeing it. Please provide me with the
documentation.”

Sen. Byron Dorgan (D-N.D.) also told Cybercast News Service he was
unaware of Obama’s position on DOMA. “I haven’t heard him say that,” he
said.

Only Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) said she would support Obama in
such a plan. “Yes, I would,” she said.

Post Turtle

While suturing a cut on the hand of a 75 year old Texas rancher, whose hand was caught in a gate while working cattle, the doctor struck up a conversation with the old man. Eventually the topic got around to Obama and his bid to be our President.

The old rancher said, “Well, ya know, Obama is a ‘post turtle’.’ Not being familiar with the term, the doctor asked him what a ‘post turtle’ was.

The old rancher said, “When you’re driving down a country road and you come across a fence post with a turtle balanced on top, that’s a ‘post turtle’.”

The old rancher saw a puzzled look on the doctor’s face, so he continued to explain. “You know he didn’t get up there by himself, he doesn’t belong up there, he doesn’t know what to do while he is up there, and you just wonder what kind of dumb idiot put him up there!’

Rev. Wright Defends Church, Blasts Media

How Obama can say he had no idea Wright believed certain things or that he (Obama) disagrees with his Pastor’s words, is beyond me. Did he or did he not attend this church for 20 years? Was Wright his mentor and counsellor or was he not? I have been attending the same church for seven years and I know my Pastor’s style, beliefs and disbeliefs. All this after seven years! Therefore, I find it all hard to believe that Wright’s comments in his sermons and now the “defense of black church traditions” has not had some effect on Obama! Come on people! Are we not intelligent human beings? Do we not have brains? Are we so blinded by the liberal media that we cannot see a wolf in sheep’s clothing?

The Rev. Jeremiah A. Wright Jr. spoke at the
National Press Club in Washington on Monday.
(Photo: Doug Mills/The New York Times)

In three major appearances in the last four days, the Rev. Jeremiah Wright Jr. offered a full-throated historical defense of black church traditions. But his re-emergence on the national stage has certainly served to provide more sound-bites that already have begun to haunt Senator Barack Obama on the campaign trail.

With Senator John McCain’s fresh criticisms of the pastor and Republicans painting him and Mr. Obama as extremist in commercials using snippets of sermons, Mr. Wright, longtime pastor of the Trinity United Church of Christ in Chicago, defiantly and passionately argued that such criticisms were attacks on the black church and its faith traditions, not attacks on him.

In an appearance this morning at the National Press Club in Washington, Mr. Wright mixed biblical passages and scholarly works with sarcasm and humor in his efforts to address the nearly two months’ long barrage of questions that have dogged his church and Mr. Obama since excerpts of his sermons first began looping around on television and the Internet.

Asked why he chose to speak out now, Mr. Wright said: “On November the 5th and on January 21st, I’ll still be a pastor. As I’ve said, this is not an attack on Jeremiah Wright. It has nothing to do with Senator Obama. This is an attack on the black church launched by people who know nothing about the African- American religious tradition.”

Mr. Obama, a parishioner at Mr. Wright’s church for about 20 years, tried to tamp down the controversy in Philadelphia more than a month ago, with a major speech on race relations. In that address and since then, Mr. Obama said he disagreed with some of Mr. Wright’s remarks but would not denounce him because he had become like family.

In an interview on Fox News on Sunday, Mr. Obama said he had not talked with the reverend about his decision to embark on a public defense of his reputation. Asked to respond to Mr. Wright’s contention that he has been the victim of a smear campaign, Mr. Obama said: “No. I think that people were legitimately offended by some of the comments that he had made in the past. The fact that he is my former pastor I think makes it a legitimate political issue. So I understand that.”

But he also said that media coverage of Mr. Wright had simplified his service in the church, and turned him into a caricature.

Our colleague Jeff Zeleny tells us that associates of Mr. Obama said privately that his campaign was furious at Mr. Wright’s decision to step forward so publicly, but that they were unable to do anything to control this. They added, however, that the pastor’s actions prove that he and Mr. Obama are not that close, otherwise why would Mr. Wright do this now?

The timing may be critical, though, for Mr. Obama, who has struggled to regain his footing (and retooled his message) after Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton trounced him in Pennsylvania where his remarks about small-town Americans may have influenced a swath of white voters to support her.

Despite Mr. Wright’s efforts to school the public and the media on theology and the black church, some of his responses this week bring the issue of race and the church’s association with divisive figures like the Rev. Louis Farrakhan into sharp relief. Senator Clinton has already said Mr. Wright would not be her pastor, and she has pounded home the issue of Mr. Obama’s electability — given such vulnerabilities that the Republicans would seize upon in the general election.

During his remarks today, Mr. Wright chided the media for distorting his sermons and for their ignorance of biblical history and black worship traditions, joked that he had served six years in the Marines while Vice President Dick Cheney had not, and lectured his audience repeatedly about the need for reconciliation among faiths and races.

Reprising themes from the speech he gave to the NAACP in Detroit this weekend, Mr. Wright offered:

“The prophetic theology of the black church in our day is preached to set African-Americans and all other Americans free from the misconceived notion that different means deficient. Being different does not mean one is deficient. It simply means one is different, like snowflakes, like the diversity that God loves. Black music is different from European and European music. It is not deficient. It is just different. Black worship is different from European and European-American worship. It is not deficient. It is just different. Black preaching is different from European and European-American preaching. It is not deficient. It is just different. It is not bombastic. It is not controversial. It’s different.”

Before we break off some bullet points to his responses, here’s a transcript of his full address today so that readers can appreciate the full defense Mr. Wright tried to offer.

In the question-and-answer session this morning, Mr. Wright was asked about some of the statements he’s made that were deemed incendiary and about his church’s associations with Mr. Farrakhan.
Here are a few bullet points:

Farrakhan: Mr. Wright praised Mr. Farrakhan’s ability to get 1 million people to march on the Washington Mall. Then, he added:

“He is one of the most important voices in the 20th and 21st century; that’s what I think about him. I said, as I said on Bill Moyers, when Louis Farrakhan speaks it’s like E.F. Hutton speaks. All black America listens. Whether they agree with him or not, they listen.

Now, I am not going to put down Louis Farrakhan any more than Mandela will put down Fidel Castro. You remember that Ted Koppel show where Ted wanted Mandela to put down Castro because Castro is our enemy, and he said, “You don’t tell me who my enemies are; you don’t tell me who my friends are.”

Louis Farrakhan is not my enemy. He did not put me in chains, he did not put me in slavery, and he didn’t make me this color.

The 9/11 Remarks:

On the excerpt of his sermon after the Sept. 11 attacks when he remarked that the “chickens were coming home to roost,” Mr. Wright first chided the questioner for not having listened to the entire sermon.

“Well, let me try to respond in a non-bombastic way.
If you heard the whole sermon, first of all, you heard that I was
quoting the ambassador from Iraq. That’s No. 1. But No. 2, to quote the Bible, “Be not deceived; God is not mocked, for whatsoever you sow that you also shall” — (he held his hand to his ear and the audience shouted “Reap!”)

Jesus said, “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.” You cannot do terrorism on other people and expect it never to come back on you. Those are biblical principles, not Jeremiah Wright bombastic divisive principles.

The Remarks About America:

The government of leaders, those — as I said to Barack Obama, my member — I’m a pastor; he’s a member. I’m not a “spiritual mentor” — hoodoo. I’m his pastor. And I said to Barack
Obama last year, “If you get elected, November the 5th I’m coming
after you, because you’ll be representing a government whose policies grind under people.” All right? It’s about policy, not the American people.

And if you saw the Bill Moyers show, I was talking about, although it got edited, I was — do you know, that’s biblical? God doesn’t bless everything. God condemns something. And D-E-M-N, demn, is where we get the word damn. God damns some practices.

And there is no excuse for the things that the government, not
the American people, have done. That doesn’t make me not
like America, or unpatriotic. So when Jesus says, not only you brood of vipers, now he’s playing the dozens because he’s talking about their mamas. To say brood means your mother is an asp, A-S-P. (Laughter.) Should we put Jesus out of the congregation?

When Jesus says, you will be brought down to hell, that’s not —
that’s bombastic device of speech. Maybe we ought to take Jesus out of this Christian faith. No.

What I said about and what I think about and what — again until
I can’t — until racism and slavery are confessed and asked for — we asked the Japanese to forgive us. We have never as a country — in fact, Clinton almost got in trouble because he almost apologized at Goree Island.

We have never apologized as a country. Britain has apologized to
Africans. But this country’s leaders have refused to apologize. So until that apology comes, I’m not going to keep stepping on your foot and asking you, does this hurt do you forgive me for stepping on your foot, if I’m still stepping on your foot. Understand that? Capice?

On His Patriotism:

I feel that those citizens who say that have never heard my sermons, nor do they know me. They are unfair accusations taken from sound bites, and that which is looped over and over again on certain channels.

I served six years in the military. Does that make me patriotic? How many years did Cheney serve?

Now, Mr. Wright dismissed the idea that it was God’s will that Mr. Obama become president. And he joked about running for vice president. Of former President Bill Clinton’s comments that many African-Americans found offensive during the South Carolina primary, Mr. Wright said: “I don’t think anything about them. I came here to talk about the prophetic theology of the black church. I’m not talking about candidates or their positions or their feelings or what they have to say to get elected.”

We have yet to hear today from Mr. Obama on Mr. Wright’s remarks. But David Axelrod, the campaign’s chief strategist, was questioned closely this morning on MSNBC about whether the pastor’s very public speeches will harm the candidate. “How many times,” Mr. Axelrod asked, “how many times can you say, ‘I don’t agree with him, some of the things he says are outrageous, and he doesn’t speak for me?’ ”

He was also asked by Pat Buchanan, the conservative commentator, whether Mr. Wright’s decision to speak at the National Press Club, a high-profile platform, wasn’t exploitative of his relationship with Mr. Obama?

“And does that not put sort of a burden on Barack Obama, who is trying to be a unifying figure, to have to cut this guy loose in a way that he was unable to do or would not do in Philadelphia?” Mr. Buchanan asked.

“Well, he — first of all, Pat, Barack Obama is a unifying figure, always has been in our politics here in Illinois and in everything that he’s ever done. And I think people will judge him on that basis,” Mr. Axelrod said. “I’m not going to comment on Reverend Wright’s motivations or, you know, the sort of political implications of what he’s doing. We’re going to go out — I mean, the one thing that I’m going to make clear and that we’ll continue to make clear is that he does not speak for us.”
