The Most High – Our High Priest

Have you ever heard of the principle of “First Mentions”? It suggests that when a word, theme or doctrine is first mentioned in the Bible, it has significance, and you should study the matter. The first mention of “the most high” is found in Genesis 14 when speaking of Melchizedek. It is here that we see learn he was the king of Salem; this city is now known as Jerusalem. Not only was he the king, but he was also the priest of the most high God! The following verses provide an understanding of Jesus’s role:

Genesis 14:18-20 And Melchizedek king of Salem brought forth bread and wine: and he was the priest of the most high God.  (19)  And he blessed him, and said, Blessed be Abram of the most high God, possessor of heaven and earth: (20) And blessed be the most high God, which hath delivered thine enemies into thy hand. And he gave him tithes of all.

Hebrews 4:14-16 Seeing then that we have a great high priest, that is passed into the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our profession. (15) For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin. (16) Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.

Hebrews 5:8-10 Though he were a Son, yet learned he obedience by the things which he suffered; (9) And being made perfect, he became the author of eternal salvation unto all them that obey him; (10) Called of God an high priest after the order of Melchisedec.

Hebrews 6:19-20 Which hope we have as an anchor of the soul, both sure and stedfast, and which entereth into that within the veil; (20) Whither the forerunner is for us entered, even Jesus, made an high priest for ever after the order of Melchisedec.

Hebrews 7:1-3 For this Melchisedec, king of Salem, priest of the most high God, who met Abraham returning from the slaughter of the kings, and blessed him; (2) To whom also Abraham gave a tenth part of all; first being by interpretation King of righteousness, and after that also King of Salem, which is, King of peace; (3) Without father, without mother, without descent, having neither beginning of days, nor end of life; but made like unto the Son of God; abideth a priest continually.

Hebrews 7:9-12 And as I may so say, Levi also, who receiveth tithes, payed tithes in Abraham.  (10)  For he was yet in the loins of his father, when Melchisedec met him. (11) If therefore perfection were by the Levitical priesthood, (for under it the people received the law,) what further need was there that another priest should rise after the order of Melchisedec, and not be called after the order of Aaron? (12) For the priesthood being changed, there is made of necessity a change also of the law.

Hebrews 7:14-17 For it is evident that our Lord sprang out of Juda; of which tribe Moses spake nothing concerning priesthood. (15) And it is yet far more evident: for that after the similitude of Melchisedec there ariseth another priest, (16) Who is made, not after the law of a carnal commandment, but after the power of an endless life. (17) For he testifieth, Thou art a priest for ever after the order of Melchisedec.

The title for God the Father is “The Most High” – although we can’t totally understand the Trinity, we do understand that there are three distinct roles (the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit) but all are One God. This mystery reveals that God’s nature goes beyond our human comprehension. Each role within the Trinity reveals unique attributes and qualities of the Divine: The Father as creator and sustainer, the Son as the redeemer and embodies God’s love, and the Holy Spirit as the guide, teacher, and comforter in our lives. When we reach Heaven, our faith will be made sight, and we will experience the fullness of His glory. In the meantime, we hold fast to our beliefs in faith, trusting that our understanding will deepen as we grow spiritually, and that our relationship with the Lord will continually mature, feeding our souls as we seek to live out His love and mission on Earth.

Each person of the Trinity has a distinct role that contributes to the greater whole.

  • The Father is the Most High and is our loving Father, who cares for each of His creations with infinite love and mercy.
  • Jesus Christ, who is the High Priest of the Most High, took on flesh in order to live a sinless life, facing every temptation we encounter, and ultimately shedding His blood to save us from eternal punishment and separation from God. You no longer need a priest to intercede between you and God because your High Priest, Jesus, has removed that barrier and replaced it with a relationship between God and man, a cherished bond that allows for direct communication and intimacy. You can now go to God the Father directly, bringing your prayers, hopes, and fears to Him with confidence and trust in His goodness.
  • The Holy Spirit is Jesus’s gift to the Church after He ascended into Heaven, ensuring we are never left alone in our spiritual journey. The Holy Spirit does so much in the believer’s life: He convicts us of sin, guiding us back to the path of righteousness, comforts us in our pain, providing solace in our darkest moments, teaches us through the Word, shedding light on our understanding, and gives us the power to share the Gospel of Jesus Christ, equipping us to fulfill the Great Commission with boldness and grace.

If you don’t know without a doubt that you would go to Heaven when you die, please take a moment to reflect on your spiritual condition. Seek a deeper understanding and connection with Him, for He longs for a personal relationship with you. Prophecy of Messiah:

Lev 14:11  And the priest that maketh him clean shall present the man that is to be made clean, and those things, before the LORD, at the door of the tabernacle of the congregation:

Have you ever wondered why leprosy in the Bible is likened to sin? Isaiah gave the best description in Isa 64:6  But we are all as an unclean thing, and all our righteousnesses are as filthy rags; and we all do fade as a leaf; and our iniquities, like the wind, have taken us away. Isaiah is saying that even our very best deed is like filthy rags! Ponder that for a moment! The greatest philanthropist still needs salvation because nothing that person has done can make him clean before God. The procedure in the Old Testament for a leper to be pronounced cleaned was to first go to the priest. Then the priest had to present the man at the door of the tabernacle of the congregation. Jesus, the great High Priest, is the only One who can make us clean and He is the only door!

Heb 4:14-16  Seeing then that we have a great high priest, that is passed into the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our profession.  (15)  For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin.  (16)  Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.

1Jn 1:7  But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin.

Joh 10:7  Then said Jesus unto them again, Verily, verily, I say unto you, I am the door of the sheep. Joh 10:9  I am the door: by me if any man enter in, he shall be saved, and shall go in and out, and find pasture.

This is why Jesus told the leper to go to the priest and do all that Moses commanded to be done in this instance. Jesus did not contradict the Scriptures but showed the priests that He was fulfilling those Scriptures: that He would make man clean as He is that one and only door which man must enter into in order to be saved! Jesus cleans us from our our sinfulness (our leprosy) and He is the only offering that can be given for our sin! He then presents us to that door – that entrance to eternal life in Heaven!

Prophecy of Messiah Fulfilled:

Luk 5:12-14  And it came to pass, when he was in a certain city, behold a man full of leprosy: who seeing Jesus fell on his face, and besought him, saying, Lord, if thou wilt, thou canst make me clean.  (13)  And he put forth his hand, and touched him, saying, I will: be thou clean. And immediately the leprosy departed from him.  (14)  And he charged him to tell no man: but go, and shew thyself to the priest, and offer for thy cleansing, according as Moses commanded, for a testimony unto them.

What a beautiful picture! Have you experienced the Lord’s mercy? He will show you mercy if your heart is open to acknowledge your sin before Him. He is the only one that can take leprous sin and forgive it! Jesus stands ready to forgive and save! Do you know Him personally or do you only know of Him? I want to be sure that anyone who reads the posts on this blog can know beyond a shadow of a doubt that they are going to Heaven. Have you received Christ as your Saviour? If no, your sins are not covered by His sacrificial offering of Himself. You have not been redeemed by His blood. It is no coincidence that God has placed you here for such a time as this so that you may be saved if you are not already.
