The Anchored Soul – Day 64 – Are You in the Waiting Room of Pain?

In the quiet rooms of physical suffering, where medical timelines seem never ending, and answers seem distant, a peace that surpasses understanding is waiting for you. When medical systems stall and bodily pain intensifies, we find ourselves at a critical crossroads: will we lean on our own understanding, or rest in everlasting strength? It is one thing to praise God on the mountaintop, but an entirely deeper faith is forged in the valley of physical affliction and uncertain waiting. I’ve found that leaning on my own understanding never produces complete peace. It produces more questions than answers them. It produces anxiety and an endless fatigue. I want that peace that surpasses all understanding. (Philippians 4:7)

These timeless words from Holy Scripture serve as our anchor when the storms of life threaten to overwhelm us. When physical pain racks our bodies and the future seems shrouded in uncertainty, our human intellect desperately searches for immediate answers and swift relief. Yet, the wisdom of God reminds us that our own understanding is limited, broken, and insufficient. True peace begins when we stop trying to figure out the “how” and “when” of our circumstances and instead resolve to rest entirely in the hands of the One who holds tomorrow.

Right now, I am walking through a season of intense, agonizing physical suffering. Severe pain in my lower back has left me dependent on nerve and pain medications just to get through each day. The medical path ahead feels excruciatingly slow; I am required to receive another injection before surgery can even be considered for approval. To compound the trial, the wait for this injection stretches all the way until the end of January. Beyond that, the timeline for Medicare approval remains a massive question mark. When human systems, medical schedules, and government approvals move at a snail’s pace, it is incredibly easy to give in to frustration and despair. But do I think that God doesn’t know these details? I’m ashamed to admit that I didn’t even think of it. I was more absorbed in my own circumstances than to meditate on the Scriptures that would heal my broken spirit.

It is precisely in these moments of waiting and weeping that the Lord calls us to an exercise of faith.

When my mind focuses entirely on the daily back pain, the long months of waiting, and the bureaucratic hurdles of insurance, my peace evaporates. But when I intentionally shift my gaze and stay my mind upon the Lord Jehovah, a supernatural peace takes over. I don’t fully understand how, but what I do know is that He is faithful. The system may be delayed, but the Lord is never late.

Consider the magnificent truth of who our God is: He is the Almighty Creator of the universe. The very hands that flung the stars into space and spoke the world into existence are the hands that hold your life and mine. If He is vast enough to hold together the cosmos, He is most certainly detailed and loving enough to care for me in my hour of deepest need. He sees every tear, feels every throb of pain, and knows the exact date of every appointment. His delays are not denials; they are the canvas upon which He displays His perfect timing and care. I do not see His perfect plan; I do not yet know His perfect will. But one thing I do know is that HE is Perfect. HE is the perfect Father who loves His child and will take care of His child in a perfect way. I just need to rest in my Father’s arms by reading the Word. As David encouraged himself in the LORD his God, I must and need to do the same. (1 Samuel 30:6)

Dear reader, whatever “awful pain” or agonizing wait you are facing today—whether it is physical, financial, emotional, or spiritual—do not lose heart. When all the earthly avenues fail, when the waiting rooms of life feel lonely, and when the answers do not come, trust the Lord. He has promised to direct your paths and keep you in perfect peace. Lean hard on His everlasting strength today, knowing that the Creator of all things is intimately mindful of you and will see you through to the other side.
