Papal Infallibility

Wikipedia defines Papal Infallibility as:

In Catholic theology, papal infallibility is the dogma that, by action of the Holy Spirit, the Pope is preserved from even the possibility of error[1] when he solemnly declares or promulgates to the Church a dogmatic teaching on faith or morals as being contained in divine revelation, or at least being intimately connected to divine revelation. For all such infallible teachings, the Holy Spirit also works through the body of the Church to ensure that the teaching will be received by all Catholics.

This doctrine was defined dogmatically in the First Vatican Council of 1870. According to Catholic theology, there are several concepts important to the understanding of infallible, divine revelation: Sacred Scripture, Sacred Tradition, and the Sacred Magisterium. The infallible teachings of the pope are part of the Sacred Magisterium, which also consists of ecumenical councils and the “ordinary and universal magisterium”. In Catholic theology, papal infallibility is one of the channels of the infallibility of the Church. The infallible teachings of the pope must be based on, or at least not contradict, Sacred Tradition or Sacred Scripture. Papal infallibility does not signify that the pope is impeccable, i.e., that he is specially exempt from liability to sin.

According to The Complete Idiot’s Guide to Understanding Catholicism: “In reality, the pope seldom uses his power of infallibility……rather than being some mystical power of the pope, infallibility means the church allows the office of the pope to be the ruling agent in deciding what will be accepted as formal beliefs in the church.”[2] Since the 1870 solemn declaration of Papal Infallibility by Vatican I, this power has been used only once: in 1950 when Pius XII defined the Assumption of Mary as being an article of faith for Roman Catholics.

I was drawn particularly to two statements. The first: “This doctrine was defined dogmatically in the First Vatican Council of 1870.” Why did it take the catholic church all those years to determine that their pope is infallible? Was he not infallible before? Pope Pius IX was the one who came up with this doctrine. He also formally defined the dogma of the Immaculate Conception and organized the First Vatican Council (which defined the dogma of papal infallibility). Why would someone need to devise a law that would state that he was infallible? What did he have to hide or what agenda did he have to push to warrant such a drastic dogma? I mean, this isn’t just “You should obey what I say because of my position as pope.” Not at all! This is saying that he cannot make a mistake!

In a speech in 1871 Pope Pius IX called the Jews of Rome “dogs” and said: “of these dogs, there are too many of them at present in Rome, and we hear them howling in the streets, and they are disturbing us in all places.” Jesus Christ was Jewish – our salvation comes from the God of the Jews. (Jon 2:9) But I will sacrifice unto thee with the voice of thanksgiving; I will pay that that I have vowed. Salvation is of the LORD. (Joh 4:22) Ye worship ye know not what: we know what we worship: for salvation is of the Jews. These words from the pope’s mouth almost sound like those of Hitler!

So here are the two visible things he promoted: (1) Mary was sinless at her birth and (2) he hated Jews.

The second quote from Wikipedia that stuck out to me was: “In Catholic theology, papal infallibility is one of the channels of the infallibility of the Church. The infallible teachings of the pope must be based on, or at least not contradict, Sacred Tradition or Sacred Scripture” This is a contradiction in itself. According to this statement, Papal ruling must not contradict Tradition OR Scripture! Where does it say in the Bible that Mary was born sinless? The Word of God is quite clear that all men have sinned:

(Rom 3:23) For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;(Rom 5:12) Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned

(Isa 53:6) All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and the LORD hath laid on him the iniquity of us all.

(Rom 3:10) As it is written, There is none righteous, no, not one:

(Psa 14:3) They are all gone aside, they are all together become filthy: there is none that doeth good, no, not one.

(Psa 53:3) Every one of them is gone back: they are altogether become filthy; there is none that doeth good, no, not one.

(Rom 3:12) They are all gone out of the way, they are together become unprofitable; there is none that doeth good, no, not one.

Mary needed a Saviour just like you and I. Rom 3:23 states that ALL men have sinned and Rom. 5:12 says that sin entered into the world by one man and all since him have sinned. David wrote in (Psa 51:5) Behold, I was shapen in iniquity; and in sin did my mother conceive me. that he was brought forth in iniquity and in sin when his mother conceived him. This is Scriptural proof of man’s sinful nature from the time of conception. The law of Moses stated that every mother that conceived, either a male or female, had to offer sacrifices to God: one as a burnt offering, and one as a sin offering (see Lev 12). Luke 2:21-24 emphatically shows how Mary made these sacrifices in obedience to the Law God gave to Moses. Since Mary obeyed this laws from Lev 12, it is clear that the offerings Mary made were a pair of turtledoves, or two young pigeons (see Luk 2:24) – according to (Lev 12:8 ), one for the burnt offering and the other for a sin offering: This is ample evidence that Mary was a sinner. Furthermore, Mary said, “My soul doth magnify the Lord, And my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Saviour” (Luk 1:46-47). Why say “God my Saviour” if you are not a sinner in need of salvation?

If the infallibility of the pope is questionable in these two areas, what other areas are there that one has not even researched? You will be held accountable for buying into the lies of the catholic church because God has left His Bible for you to read and study. The Word of God is final.

Gaza Muslims continue ethnic-cleansing effort

By Stan Goodenough
February 17, 2008

Muslims attacked the library of the YMCA (Young Men’s Christian Association) in Gaza Friday in the latest move to drive Christians and Christianity out of the Islamist-controlled Strip.

According to a report in The Jerusalem Post Sunday, gunmen – some masked, others not – “stormed” the library, kidnapped two security guards, looted electronic equipment and stole a vehicle, then detonated a number of bombs inside the building, totally destroying the book collection.

Intent on making the area Islamically “pure,” Muslim Arabs have looked for “reasons” to “justify” their targeting of the tiny Christian community – around 3000 strong – that lives in the midst of Gaza’s 1.4 million Muslims.

The persecution has increased since Hamas violently took control of Gaza a year ago.

On October 6 last year, Muslims abducted Rami Ayyad, the manager of Gaza’s only Christian bookstore that had been bombed by masked Muslims six months earlier.

Ayyad, 31, was the father of two small children; his wife was pregnant with their third. His shot and repeatedly stabbed body was found a day after he disappeared.

For Gaza’s Muslims, ridding themselves of any active Christian presence would be cherry on top after successfully forcing Israel to remove every single Jew from Gaza in 2005.

“Palestinian” crowds have often been heard to chant: “First we’ll fight on Saturday and then on Sunday” – meaning, after they rid themselves of Jews they will rid themselves of Christians.

Ahmadinejad in new attack on ‘savage animal’

Israel

Feb 20 05:54 AM US/Eastern

Iran’s President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad on Wednesday launched a new strongly-worded attack against Israel, describing the Jewish state as a “dirty microbe” and a “savage animal”.”World powers have created a black and dirty microbe named the Zionist regime and have unleashed it like a savage animal on the nations of the region,” he told a rally in the southern city of Bandar Abbas broadcast on state television. Ahmadinejad has provoked international outrage by repeatedly predicting that Israel is doomed to disappear. He also courted more controversy by playing down the scale of the Holocaust.The commander of Iran’s Revolutionary Guards, Mohammad Ali Jafari, on Monday predicted Lebanese Shiite militant group Hezbollah would destroy Israel in the near future.Ahmadinejad also accused world powers of arming Israel with billions of dollars of weapons to create a “scarecrow” to frighten and dominate other nations in the region.His tirade came a week after the murder in Damascus of Imad Mughnieh, a top commander of the Lebanese Shiite militant group Hezbollah, who Iran hailed as a great martyr who was killed by Israel.Israel has denied any involvement in his murder although it welcomed Mughnieh’s death.”They assassinate pure and pious people and then they celebrate it, like what happened to the son of Lebanon who had stood against the savage onslaught of the Zionists and broke the Zionists’ horns,” said Ahmadinejad.

The United States accuses Iran, along with its regional ally Syria, of arming and financing Hezbollah, as well as working to destabilise Lebanon in its current political crisis.

Overwhelmingly Shiite Iran jubilantly cheered Hezbollah’s resistance against Israel in the 2006 war but insists it only gives the Lebanese group political support and not military aid.

Word of God – Day 24 – God’s Word Not to be Changed

(Pro 30:5) Every word of God is pure: he is a shield unto them that put their trust in him. (Pro 30:6) Add thou not unto his words, lest he reprove thee, and thou be found a liar.

When I was first saved, I came across so many people, saved and unsaved, who believed that God’s words could be found in the Holy Bible. However, as time has passed in my almost 28 years of salvation, the numbers are decreasing by leaps and bounds. Is it any wonder that we do not see true repentance anymore? We see many who say the sinner’s prayer but their hearts are far from sincere. Their lives don’t change. They still sin the same old sins. They go on with their lives as if nothing ever happened. They don’t have the peace that comes with salvation. Instead, they have only managed to experience a temporary “feel good” event and they will search for that same “feel good” event over and over. They will continue to go to church and perform the same religious routine hoping that they have covered all their bases. But where is assurance of their salvation? There is none because they base their salvation on their church or something they did. True assurance of salvation comes with complete peace and eternal security because all of it rests on Jesus Christ’s work on the cross. It is He who paid the price for our sin – completely. Nothing we can do or say can add or take away from Christ’s gift of grace to us.

God’s Word is so important and it is the only thing that can reach the lost. (Rom 10:17) So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God. Is it any wonder that focus on God’s Word has been shifted in today’s world to different “versions” and compromises between “religions”? Jesus said, (Luk 4:4) And Jesus answered him, saying, It is written, That man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word of God. If we are to live by every word of God as if it were food, it stands to reason that we would be provided with that word/food so we can live by it. Correct? Just as God provided manna to the Jews in the wilderness, how much more will He provide us with our manna through the Bible in our wilderness journey as pilgrims here on earth?

Jesus also said Luk 6:40 The disciple is not above his master: but every one that is perfect shall be as his master.Therefore, there is nothing that man can do or say which will be above His word. To say that magisterium and tradition supersede or even work “in conjunction with” the Bible is a lie. Jesus says that man is not above Him. No pope – no magisterium – no tradition is above Him. His Word is final. His Word is complete. He is our Master and His word is above all. The latter part of the verse says that everyone that is perfect shall be as his Master. How can we be perfect? Let the Word define it for us: (2Ti 3:16) All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: (2Ti 3:17) That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works. This is not talking about sinless perfection but about how we can live by God’s words and can be guided by them because we have the perfect Word of God with us.

It’s important to understand that the Lord has left us equipped with His words and we will be judged accordingly. Many households in the United States have a Bible on their bookshelves – some have several. But how many people ever read that Bible? It amazes me that it is still the number one seller on the book market yet our world is getting more evil with each passing day! It’s important to do the things which are commanded within the Bible’s pages but how can you do them unless you read? Luk 6:46 And why call ye me, Lord, Lord, and do not the things which I say? Over and over we are commanded in God’s Word to DO the things which God says. Over and over, the Word speaks of obedience to God and His word – not obedience to men and the traditions of men. God will not allow compromise, my friend! He is not a compromiser and certainly will not compromise His Word! Why would God say one thing in His Word and then 300 years later, through the pope or the councils, that it’s O.K. to do differently than He had previously commanded or add to what He previously commanded?

Anyone who allows church traditions and cult leaders to guide them are being led by a lie. We do not have to be blind – God has left us the light of His Word to guide us. Luk 6:39 And he spake a parable unto them, Can the blind lead the blind? shall they not both fall into the ditch? These liars preach just enough of the Bible to set a trap for their “following” and then they lead them straight to hell. But the responsibility does not lie with these liars. The responsibility lies with the one who allows himself to be trapped into their lies. We each must take responsibility for what we hear and what we believe. The sincere heart will be led by the Spirit of God to salvation. But the insincere heart will be sucked into every wind of doctrine. (Eph 4:14) That we henceforth be no more children, tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men, and cunning craftiness, whereby they lie in wait to deceive; (Eph 4:15) But speaking the truth in love, may grow up into him in all things, which is the head, even Christ: Therefore, it is important to remember that we have the correct doctrine found in the Word of God. Paul encourages the Ephesians not to be tossed about with false doctrines. How can you encourage someone to recognize false doctrine unless you have the real thing right then and there for them to compare with?

DHS Warns Of Pregnant Prosthetic Belly Bombings

New Wave Of Terrorism Carried Out By Women Wearing Loaded Pregnant Suits
Reporting Sean Hennessey WASHINGTON (CBS) ― The FBI and Department of Homeland Security are warning against a new type of terrorism carried out by women who appear to be pregnant.

It may be the newest wave in suicide attacks: a prosthetic pregnant belly serving as a compartment for explosives. The belly opens up from the front and the explosives are placed inside.

“It’s not the first time we’ve had women involved before in one way or another,” says security expert Robert Strang.

Strang tells CBS 2 he isn’t surprised at the new lows terrorists will stoop to — lows that include those with Down syndrome even carrying out suicide attacks in Baghdad.

“They’re recruiting anybody they can get to do those things that’s not going to inform law enforcement, that’s not going to be a threat to these organizations that can get the job done,” says Strang.

With terrorist training camps up and running in Pakistan, there are now fears Americans might one day be involved. Authorities are increasingly worried that Al Qaeda is actively recruiting people who look like Americans and sound like Americans to carry out the next attack on America.

“Whether it’s Americans or whether it’s people who can launch from Europe, because they have visas or passports that allow them to travel to the United States, they are looking at people who can operate in the west,” says Philip Mudd of the FBI.

Authorities say there is “no specific, credible intelligence” that says terrorists are planning to use women and suicide bombers to attack, but the warning was sent to agencies across the country in the wake of recent attacks overseas.

Which Presidential Candidates are most anxious to spread around the feed corn?

A friend of mine sent me this e-mail that really got me to thinking. Excellent reading!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
There was a chemistry professor in a large college that had some exchange students in the class. One day while the class was in the lab, the prof noticed one young man, an exchange student, who kept rubbing his back and stretching as if his back hurt.
The professor asked the young man what was the matter. The student told him he had a bullet lodged in his back. He had been shot while fighting communists in his native country who were trying to overthrow his country’s government and install a new communist regime.
In the midst of his story, he looked at the professor and asked a strange question. He asked:
“Do you know how to catch wild pigs?”
The professor thought it was a joke and asked for the punch line. The young man said that it was no joke.
“You catch wild pigs by finding a suitable place in th e woods and putting corn on the ground. The pigs find it and begin to come everyday to eat the free corn. When they are used to coming every day, you put a fence down one side of the place where they are used to coming. When they get used to the fence, they begin to eat the corn again and you put up another side of the fence. They get used to that and start to eat again. You continue until you have all four sides of the fence up with a gate in the last side.. The pigs, which are used to the free corn, start to come through the gate to eat that free corn again. You then slam the gate on them and catch the whole herd Suddenly the wild pigs have lost their freedom. They run around and around inside the fence, but they are caught. Soon they go back to eating the free corn. They are so used to it that they have forgotten how to forage in the woods for themselves, so they accept their captivity.”
The young man then told the professor that is exactly what he sees happening in America. The government keeps pushing us toward Communism/Socialism and keeps spreading the free corn out in the form of programs such as supplemental income, tax credit for unearned income, tax cuts, tax exemptions, tobacco subsidies, dairy subsidies, payments not to plant crops (CRP), welfare, medicine, drugs, etc.. While we continually lose our freedoms, just a little at a time.
One should always remember two truths: There is no such thing as a free lunch and you can never hire someone to provide a service for you cheaper than you can do it yourself. If you see that all of this wonderful government “help” is a problem confronting the future of democracy in America, you might want to alert your friends. If you think the free ride is essential to your way of life, then you will probably move on. But God help you when the gate slams shut!
The only thing I can add to this is a question for you….. Which candidates out there are most anxious to spread around the feed corn, and what might their motives be? Think about it.
The Passion of Christ from a Medical Point of View
Brother Nicholas Cardot at Baptist Muse had this on his blog today. It reminded me that I had this on my Maranatha website for many years. It is definitely worthy of being published on the internet for as many eyes to read as possible. No Christian can read through this and walk away with a dry eye! Thanks for reminding me, Bro. Nicholas!
Vol. 22, No. 3, March 1965
In this paper, I shall discuss some of the physical aspects of the passion, or suffering, of Jesus Christ. We shall follow Him from Gethsemane through His trial, His scourging, His path along the Via Dolorosa, to His last dying hours on the cross.
I became interested in this about a year ago when I read an account of the crucifixion in Jim Bishop’s book, THE DAY CHRIST DIED. I suddenly realized that I had taken the Crucifixion more or less for granted all these years—that I had grown callous to its horror by a too easy familiarity with the grim details—and that as a physician I didn’t even know the actual immediate cause of death. The Gospel writers don’t help us very much on this point because crucifixion and scourging were so common during their lifetime that they undoubtedly considered a detailed description totally superfluous—so we have the concise words of the Evangelists; “Pilate, having scourged Jesus, delivered Him to them to be crucified—and they crucified Him.”‘
I am indebted to many who have studied this subject in the past, and especially to a contemporary colleague, Dr. Pierre Barbet, a French surgeon who has done exhaustive historical and experimental research and has written extensively on the subject.
The infinite psychic and spiritual sufferings of the Incarnate God in atonement for the sins of fallen man I have no competence to discuss; however, the physiological and anatomical aspects of our Lord’s passion we can examine in some detail…what did the body of Jesus of Nazareth actually endure during those hours of torture?
This led me first to a study of the practice of crucifixion itself; that is, the torture and execution of a person by fixation to a cross. Apparently, the first know practice of crucifixion was by the Persians. Alexander and his generals brought it back to the Mediterranean world—to Egypt and to Carthage. The Romans apparently learned the practice from the Carthaginians and (as with almost everything the Romans did) rapidly developed a very high degree of efficiency and skill in carrying it out. A number of Roman authors (Livy, Cicero, Tacitus) comment on it. Several innovations and modifications are described in the ancient literature; I’ll mention only a few which may have some bearing here. The upright portion of the cross (or stipes) could have the cross-arm (or patibulum) attached two or three feet below its top—this is what we commonly think of today as the classical form, of the cross (the one which we later named the Latin cross); however, the common form used in our Lord’s day was the Tau cross (shaped like the Greek letter Tau or like our T). In this cross the patibulum was placed in a notch at the top of the stipes. There is fairly overwhelming archaeological evidence that it was on this type of cross that Jesus was crucified.
The upright post, or stipes, was generally permanently fixed in the ground at the site of execution and the condemned man was forced to carry the patibulum, apparently weighing about 110 pounds, from the prison to the place of execution. Without any historical or Biblical proof, medieval and Renaissance painters have given us our picture of Christ carrying the entire cross. Many of these painters and most of the sculptors of crucifixes today show the nails through the palm. Roman historical accounts and experimental work have shown that the nails were driven between the small bones of the wrists and not through the palms. Nails driven through the palm will strip out between the fingers when they support the weight of the human body. The misconceptions may have come about through a misunderstanding of Jesus’ words to Thomas, “Observe my hands.” Anatomists, both modern and ancient, have always considered the wrists as part of the hand.
A titulus, or small sign, stating the victim’s crime was usually carried at the front of the procession and later nailed to the cross above the head. This sign with its staff nailed to the top of the cross would have given it somewhat the characteristic form of the Latin cross.
The physical passion of the Christ begins in Gethsemane. Of the many aspects of this initial suffering, I shall only discuss the one of physiological interest; the bloody sweat. It is interesting that the physician of the group, St. Luke, is the only one to mention this. He says, “And being in agony, He prayed the longer. And His sweat became as drops of blood, trickling down upon the ground.”
Every attempt imaginable has been used by modern scholars to explain away this phrase, apparently under the mistaken impression that this just doesn’t happen.
A great deal of effort could be saved by consulting the medical literature. Though very rare, the phenomenon of Hematidrosis, or bloody sweat, is well documented. Under great emotional strain, tiny capillaries in the sweat glands can break, thus mixing blood with sweat. This process alone could have produced marked weakness and possible shock.
We shall move rapidly through the betrayal and arrest; I must stress again that important portions of the Passion story are missing from this account. This may be frustrating to you, but in order to adhere to our purpose of discussing only the purely physical aspects of the Passion, this is necessary. After the arrest in the middle of the night, Jesus was brought before the Sanhedrin and Caiphas, the High Priest; it is here that the first physical trauma was inflicted. A soldier struck Jesus across the face for remaining silent when questioned by Caiphas. The palace guards then blindfolded Him and mockingly taunted Him to identify them as they each passed by, spat on Him, and struck Him in the face.
In the early morning, Jesus, battered and bruised, dehydrated, and exhausted from a sleepless night, is taken across Jerusalem to the Praetorium of the Fortress Antonia, the seat of government of the Procurator of Judea, Pontius Pilate. You are, of course, familiar with Pilate’s action in attempting to pass responsibility to Herod Antipas, the Tetrach of Judea. Jesus apparently suffered no physical mistreatment at the hands of Herod and was returned to Pilate. It was then, in response to the cries of the mob, that Pilate ordered Barabbas released and condemned Jesus to scourging and crucifixion. There is much disagreement among authorities about scourging as a prelude to crucifixion. Most Roman writers from this period do not associate the two. Many scholars believe that Pilate originally ordered Jesus scourged as his full punishment and that the death sentence by crucifixion came only in response to the taunt by the mob that the Procurator was not properly defending Caesar against this pretender who claimed to be the King of the Jews.
Preparations for the scourging are carried out. The prisoner is stripped of His clothing and His hands tied to a post above His head. It is doubtful whether the Romans made any attempt to follow the Jewish law in this matter of scourging. The Jews had an ancient law prohibiting more than forty lashes. The Pharisees, always making sure that the law was strictly kept, insisted that only thirty-nine lashes be given. (In case of a miscount, they were sure of remaining within the law.) The Romans legionnaire steps forward with the flagrum (or flagellum) in his hand. This is a short whip consisting of several heavy, leather thongs with two small balls of lead attached near the ends of each. The heavy whip is brought down with full force again and again across Jesus’ shoulders, back and legs. At first the heavy thongs cut through the skin only. Then as the blows continue, they cut deeper into the subcutaneous tissues, producing first an oozing of blood from the capillaries and veins of the skin, and finally spurting arterial bleeding from vessels in the underlying muscles. The small balls of lead first produce large, deep bruises which are broken open by subsequent blows. Finally the skin of the back is hanging in long ribbons and the entire area is an unrecognizable mass of torn, bleeding tissue. When it is determined by the centurion in charge that the prisoner is near death, the beating is finally stopped.
The half-fainting Jesus is then untied and allowed to slump to the stones pavement, wet with His own blood. The Roman soldiers see a great joke in this provincial Jew claiming to be a King. They throw a robe across His shoulders and place a stick in His hands for a scepter. They still need a crown to make their travesty complete. A small bundle of flexible branches covered with long thorns (commonly used for firewood) are plaited into the shape of a crown and this is pressed into His scalp. Again there is copious bleeding (the scalp being one of the most vascular areas of the body). After mocking Him and striking Him across the face, the soldiers take the stick from His hand and strike Him across the face, the soldiers take the stick from His hand and they tire of their sadistic sport and the robe is torn from His back. This had already become adherent to the clots of blood and serum in the wounds, and its removal, just as in the careless removal of a surgical bandage, causes excruciating pain…almost as though He were again being whipped—and the wounds again begin to bleed.
In deference to Jewish custom, the Romans return His garments. The heavy patibulum of the cross is tied across His shoulders, and the procession of the condemned Christ, two thieves and the execution detail of Roman soldiers, headed by a centurion, begins its slow journey along the Via Dolorosa. In spite of His efforts to walk erect, the weight of the heavy wooden beam, together with the shock produced by copious blood loss, is too much. He stumbles and falls. The rough wood of the beam gouges into the lacerated skin and muscles of the shoulders. He tries to rise, but human muscles have been pushed beyond their endurance. The centurion, anxious to get on with the crucifixion, selects a stalwart North African onlooker, Simon of Cyrene, to carry the cross. Jesus follows, still bleeding and sweating the cold, clammy sweat of shock. The 650 yard journey from the fortress Antonia to Golgotha is finally completed. The prisoner is again stripped of His clothes—except a loin cloth which is allowed the Jews.
The crucifixion begins. Jesus is offered wine mixed with myrrh, a mild analgesic mixture. He refuses to drink. Simon is ordered to place the patibulum on the ground and Jesus is quickly thrown backward with His shoulders against the wood. The legionnaire feels for the depression at the front of the wrist. He drives a heavy, square wrought iron nail through the wrist and deep into the wood. Quickly, he moves to the other side and repeats the action, being careful not to pull the arms too tightly, but to allow some flexion and movement. The patibulum is then lifted in place at the top of the stripes and the titulus reading, “Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews” is nailed in place.
The left foot is pressed backward against the right foot, and with both feet extended, toes down, a nail is driven through the arch of each, leaving the knees moderately flexed. The victim is now crucified. As He slowly sags down with more weight on the nails in the wrists, excruciating, fiery pain shoots along the fingers and up the arms to explode in the brain—the nails in the wrists are putting pressure on the median nerves. As he pushes Himself upward to avoid the stretching torment, He places His full weight on the nail through His feet.
At this point, another phenomenon occurs. As the arms fatigue, great waves of cramps sweep over the muscles, knotting them in deep relentless, throbbing pain. With these cramps comes the inability to push Himself upward. Hanging by His arms, the pectoral muscles are paralyzed and the intercostal muscles are unable to act. Air can be drawn into the lungs, but cannot be exhaled. Jesus fights to raise Himself in order to get even one short breath. Finally, carbon dioxide builds up in the lungs and in the blood stream and the cramps partially subside. Spasmodically He is able to push himself upward to exhale and bring in the lifegiving oxygen. It was undoubtedly during these periods that He uttered the seven short sentences which are recorded.
The first, looking down at the Roman soldiers throwing dice for His seamless garment, “Father forgive them for they know not what they do.”
The second, to the penitent thief, “Today thou shalt be with me in Paradise.”
The third, looking down at the terrified, grief stricken, adolescent John (the beloved Apostle), He said, “Behold thy mother,” and looking to Mary, His mother, “Woman behold thy son.”
The fourth cry is from the beginning of the 22nd Psalm, “My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?”
Hours of this limitless pain, cycles of twisting, joint-rending cramps, intermittent partial asphyxiation, searing pain as tissue is torn from His lacerated back as He moves up and down against the rough timber; then another agony begins. A deep crushing pain deep in the chest as the pericardium slowly fills with serum and begins to compress the heart.
Let us remember again the 22nd Psalm (the 14th verse), “I am poured out like water, and all my bones are out of joint: my heart is like wax; it is melted in the midst of my bowels.”
It is now almost over—the loss of tissues fluid has reached a critical level—the compressed heart is struggling to pump heavy, thick sluggish blood into the tissues—the tortured lungs are making a frantic effort to gasp in small gulps of air. The markedly dehydrated tissues send their flood of stimuli to the brain.
Jesus gasps His fifth cry, “I thirst.”
Let us remember another verse from the prophetic 22nd Psalm; “My strength is dried up like a potsherd; and my tongue cleaveth to my jaws; and thou has brought me into the dust of death.”
A sponge soaked in Posca, the cheap, sour wine which is the staple drink of the Roman legionnaires, is lifted to His lips. He apparently doesn’t take any of the liquid. The body of Jesus is now in extremis, and He can feel the chill of death creeping through His tissues. This realization brings out His sixth words—possibly little more than a tortured whisper.
“It is finished.”
His mission of atonement has been completed. Finally He can allow His body to die.
With one last surge of strength, He once again presses His torn feet against the nail, straightens His legs, takes a deeper breath, and utters His seventh and last cry, “Father, into thy hands I commit my spirit.”
The rest you know. In order that the Sabbath not be profaned, the Jews asked that the condemned men be dispatched and removed from the crosses. The common method of ending a crucifixion was by curifracture, the breaking of the bones of the legs. This prevented the victim from pushing himself upward, the tension could not be relieved from the muscles of the chest, and rapid suffocation tension could not be relieved from the muscles of the chest, and rapid suffocation occurred. The legs of the two thieves were broken, but when they came to Jesus they saw that this was unnecessary.
Apparently to make doubly sure of death, the legionnaire drove his lance through the fifth interspace between the ribs, upward through the pericardium and into the heart. The 34th verse of the 19th chapter of the Gospel according to St. John: “And immediately there came out blood and water.” Thus there was an escape of watery fluid from the sac surrounding the heart and blood from the interior of the heart. We, therefore, have rather conclusively postmortem evidence that our Lord died not the usual crucifixion death by suffocation but of heart failure due to shock and construction of the heart by fluid in the pericardium.
Thus we have seen a glimpse of the epitome of evil which men can exhibit toward man—and toward God. This is not a pretty sight and is apt to leave us despondent and depressed. How grateful we can be that we have a sequel: A glimpse of the infinite mercy of God toward man—the miracle of the atonement and the expectation of Easter morning!
