Searching for God – Day 2

Day 2 – Trying to Come to Jesus by Night

Reading: John 3:1-21
Joh 3:1 There was a man of the Pharisees, named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews:
Joh 3:2 The same came to Jesus by night, and said unto him, Rabbi, we know that thou art a teacher come from God: for no man can do these miracles that thou doest, except God be with him.
Joh 3:3 Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.
Joh 3:4 Nicodemus saith unto him, How can a man be born when he is old? can he enter the second time into his mother’s womb, and be born?
Joh 3:5 Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God.
Joh 3:6 That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.
Joh 3:7 Marvel not that I said unto thee, Ye must be born again.
Joh 3:8 The wind bloweth where it listeth, and thou hearest the sound thereof, but canst not tell whence it cometh, and whither it goeth: so is every one that is born of the Spirit.
Joh 3:9 Nicodemus answered and said unto him, How can these things be?
Joh 3:10 Jesus answered and said unto him, Art thou a master of Israel, and knowest not these things?
Joh 3:11 Verily, verily, I say unto thee, We speak that we do know, and testify that we have seen; and ye receive not our witness.
Joh 3:12 If I have told you earthly things, and ye believe not, how shall ye believe, if I tell you of heavenly things?
Joh 3:13 And no man hath ascended up to heaven, but he that came down from heaven, even the Son of man which is in heaven.
Joh 3:14 And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of man be lifted up:
Joh 3:15 That whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have eternal life.
Joh 3:16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
Joh 3:17 For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved.
Joh 3:18 He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.
Joh 3:19 And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil.
Joh 3:20 For every one that doeth evil hateth the light, neither cometh to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved.
Joh 3:21 But he that doeth truth cometh to the light, that his deeds may be made manifest, that they are wrought in God.

Today’s verse:

“The same came to Jesus by night, and said unto him, Rabbi, we know that thou art a teacher come from God: for no man can do these miracles that thou doest, except God be with him.” (John 3:2)

This verse says that Nicodemus came to see Jesus by night. Why do you think he would do that? Here is one of the most religious men in the Jewish religion. He knows so much about the Bible (the Torah) but he is drawn to Jesus. It is wonderful that he went to see Jesus despite his head knowledge. But he went “by night.” Could it be he was afraid of what his fellow Pharisees would think? We think of doing things in the dark so no one will see what we are doing. At least Nicodemus’ desire to speak with Christ was not quenched. Despite his fear of repercussion from the other Pharisees or religious leaders, he went to see Jesus anyway.

He recognized Jesus as a knowledgeable man because Nicodemus called Jesus, “Rabbi.” He further confirms this by saying he knew Jesus was a teacher come from God. Furthermore, Nicodemus gives Jesus the credit for the miracles saying that no man could perform them unless God was with Him. Nicodemus was not so spiritually minded that he could not recognize Jesus coming from God.

Are you trying to meet Jesus by night? Are you afraid of what you might discover in the Bible? Are you afraid of what your family or friends will think?

Ask God to give you wisdom as you search the Bible for the path to Him.

“If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him.” (James 1:5)

Dear God…
It is to You that I come for truth
From Your Word let me not depart
Nor interfere with the Spirit’s light
Don’t let tradition cloud my heart!

In Search of God – Day 1

Head Knowledge Versus Heart Knowledge

Today’s verse:

“There was a man of the Pharisees, named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews:” (John 3:1)

Nicodemus was a Pharisee in the Jewish religion. A Pharisee was the exclusively religious of the Jews. In fact, they were known as the separatists. Nicodemus was also known as a ruler of the Jews.

According to history, to become a Pharisee, it was necessary to memorize the first five books of the Old Testament! If anyone had a reason to NOT speak with Jesus, it was him. Nicodemus had a lot of head knowledge of the Bible, known as the Torah to the Jews. Yet, something drew Nicodemus to go talk to Jesus.

Oh dear one, won’t you draw nigh to God today? Won’t you seek to know what the Bible has to say? The Bible says that if you draw close to God, He WILL draw close to you. Seek Him while you still have time.

James 4:8a “Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you.”

Dear God…
How far I’ve been from You
I truly don’t know You as Lord
The path to You is simple, so true
Show me the way through Your Word.

Morning Manna – Day 2 – Temptation

Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour: (1 Pet 5:8) As I was meditating on this verse this morning, I thought of ways I could be sober and vigilant to avoid temptation. Truly, the only way to be able to do this is if I stay in God’s Word. Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee. (Psa 119:11) The more we are in His Word, the more we will be able to be sober and vigilant. We’ll have Scripture fresh in our minds and available to meet our spiritual need of the moment. We’ll have filled our mind with spiritual vitamins to strengthen ourselves.

James says that it is our own lusts that entice us to sin. But every man is tempted, when he is drawn away of his own lust, and enticed. (Jam 1:14) If a believer has been in the Word and is drawing nigh to God, he will be able to be sober and vigilant when the devil comes as a roaring lion. But even when our defenses are down, our Heavenly Father pities us and knows what we are going through and He promises to help us. Like as a father pitieth his children, so the LORD pitieth them that fear him. (Psa 103:13) God knows what we need and is able to deliver us. The Lord knoweth how to deliver the godly out of temptations… (2 Pet 2:9a) Because He knows and is able to deliver us, He goes to great lengths to help us. There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it. (1 Cor 10:13) (Emphasis mine)

Oh Christian, we don’t need to wallow in sin like the world. We have the ability to ward off temptation. Each time we are in the Word drawing nigh to God, we are building up our defenses. Each day we should start by asking the Lord to protect us against the day’s temptations. Christ taught us this in His model prayer. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen. (Mat 6:13)

As I am being sober and vigilant, I find that I am not so easily led astray. I’m aware of my surroundings and I do not place myself in situations where I know I will be tempted. I will not be quick to go out with unsaved acquaintances because I know that they will not have my spiritual interests at heart. Instead, I will ward off temptation and steer clear. Ye therefore, beloved, seeing ye know these things before, beware lest ye also, being led away with the error of the wicked, fall from your own stedfastness. (2 Pet 3:17)

My Morning Manna from God’s Word prepares me to be spiritually fueled for the day. I feel like I have armor on and am ready for battle. My thoughts are filled with the Word and what I have gleaned. My thoughts are not on my troubles of the day because I’ve already shared those with the Lord and left them with Him. I also find that when my thoughts are not on myself, I am not easily tempted. There is nothing like a good pity party to get one focused on self and everything we lack in life. The lust of the flesh is aroused and bang! The roaring lion pounces and we are tempted to sin. But do not be discouraged, my friend, Ye are of God, little children, and have overcome them: because greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world. (1 John 4:4) What lovely words those are! Thank You, Lord!

Dear God…
Please make my Morning Manna
Spiritually filling for today
Protect me from fleshly lusts
As I walk along the way
