Hymns

The hymns of yesteryear were actual gospel messages. The writers were God-fearing Christians who knew the cost to living for Christ. This is a 30-day devotional, originally written in 2007, which covers hymns (prior to copyright laws), their authors and how they tie in with the Word of God. This series will be a blessing to my soul and I pray to yours! In a world of contemporary music and PowerPoint presentations used in church services, the old hymns and favorites are slowly fading away. My prayer is that we will be exhorted to go back to the old paths of our fathers and renew these hymns in our own daily lives. These are hymns written prior to this backslidden, emerging church called the Laodicean church. These are words written by those who have met with their Saviour in their prayer closets and have been moved by the Holy Spirit to pen the words which in turn have moved the hearts of men.

Jesus’ Blood Provides Complete Atonement!

Either Jesus’ blood washes us from all sin or His blood doesn’t wash us from all sin. This is yet another conundrum for the catholic! What does the Bible say?

But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin. ~1 John 1:7

If you do not believe that you have been completely forgiven for all your sins, something is wrong. The Bible says in the previous verse:

~1 John 1:6 If we say that we have fellowship with him, and walk in darkness, we lie, and do not the truth:

The Apostle John tells us that if we say we have fellowship with God yet we do not believe that Jesus Christ has cleansed us from all sin, we are lying about our fellowship with Him and we do not possess the truth! Where lies the truth?

~Psalm 138:2 I will worship toward thy holy temple, and praise thy name for thy lovingkindness and for thy truth: for thou hast magnified thy word above all thy name.

~John 17:17 Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth.

The Word of God, the Bible, contains the Truth, my friend. The truth is that there is no more atonement needed outside of the blood of Jesus Christ that was shed for your sins.

I found it interesting that when you do a word search to the two words, blood and Christ, there are eight verses with this combination! Eight is the Bible number meaning “new beginnings” – the New Covenant between God and His children! This excites my spirit!

~1 Corinthians 10:16 The cup of blessing which we bless, is it not the communion of the blood of Christ? The bread which we break, is it not the communion of the body of Christ?

~Ephesians 2:13 But now in Christ Jesus ye who sometimes were far off are made nigh by the blood of Christ.

~Hebrews 9:14 How much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without spot to God, purge your conscience from dead works to serve the living God?

~1Peter 1:2 Elect according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, through sanctification of the Spirit, unto obedience and sprinkling of the blood of Jesus Christ: Grace unto you, and peace, be multiplied.

~1Peter 1:19 But with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot:

~1John 1:7 But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin.

~1John 5:6 This is he that came by water and blood, even Jesus Christ; not by water only, but by water and blood. And it is the Spirit that beareth witness, because the Spirit is truth.

~Revelation 1:5 And from Jesus Christ, who is the faithful witness, and the first begotten of the dead, and the prince of the kings of the earth. Unto him that loved us, and washed us from our sins in his own blood,

Jesus Christ is the perfect lamb of God – the perfect sacrifice – the perfect redemption – the perfect atonement for your sin. There is nothing more to be done. There isn’t one iota of benefit from your works that will add to that perfect redemption.

Perfection is final – it is complete.

Catholics teach Jesus’ death is not sufficient

The catholic church teaches that salvation can be achieved through the church and the sacraments. Furthermore, even though a catholic believes he is “saved,” he must go to purgatory after he dies and be further purged from his sins before he can enter heaven. That alone teaches that Christ’s death on the cross and the blood that He shed was insufficient to do the entire job of salvation! What a disgrace to our Lord Jesus Christ! So what do the Scriptures teach?

~Romans 6:9 Knowing that Christ being raised from the dead dieth no more; death hath no more dominion over him.

~Romans 6:10 For in that he died, he died unto sin once: but in that he liveth, he liveth unto God.

~Hebrews 7:27 Who needeth not daily, as those high priests, to offer up sacrifice, first for his own sins, and then for the people’s: for this he did once, when he offered up himself.

~Hebrews 9:12 Neither by the blood of goats and calves, but by his own blood he entered in once into the holy place, having obtained eternal redemption for us.

~Hebrews 9:26 For then must he often have suffered since the foundation of the world: but now once in the end of the world hath he appeared to put away sin by the sacrifice of himself.

~Hebrews 10:10 By the which will we are sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.

~Hebrews 10:12 But this man, after he had offered one sacrifice for sins for ever, sat down on the right hand of God;

~Hebrews 10:14 For by one offering he hath perfected for ever them that are sanctified.

The sacraments (one of which is the mass) are not enough. Christ’s death was enough, however. These verses say that He died once – He does not need to die anymore for our sins – no need for any more deaths through the mass to take place. That means that Jesus Christ’s death on the cross was only needed once and that the blood that He shed was enough. His death already made perfect those who are sanctified by His blood – the born-again believer. Look at Hebrews 10:10 and 10:14 again: We are sanctified by His blood which was shed once and through that offering, Christ (not the sacraments or the catholic church) perfected those who are sanctified forever! So if you, dear catholic, believe that your salvation comes from your church and the sacraments, why do you still need to go to purgatory if Jesus’ blood perfected you forever?

~Hebrews 9:27 And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment:

One does not go to purgatory after death. The Bible says that after your death, you will be immediately judged. There is no being purged until you are holy enough to enter heaven. If that were the case, the following verse would not be in the Scriptures:

~2 Corinthians 5:10 For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ; that every one may receive the things done in his body, according to that he hath done, whether it be good or bad.

If only catholics can be saved according to your catechism and you had been in purgatory and had been completely purged upon entering heaven, then who are the ones who are receiving judgment from Christ over the things he did bad?

T-H-I-N-K! Use the brain that God gave you! The catholic doctrines are like a collander. They cannot hold the precious water of life from the Word of God because they are false doctrine taught by the traditions of men.

~Ephesians 2:8 For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:

Each Mass Sacrifices Christ Anew

The 1994 Catholic Catechism states that each time the mass is said, their redemption is carried out.

“In this divine sacrifice which is celebrated in the Mass, the same Christ who offered himself once in a bloody manner on the altar of the cross is contained and is offered in an unbloody manner.” Pg. 344, #1367

“When the Church celebrates the Eucharist, she commemorates Christ’s Passover, and it is made present. As often as the sacrifice of the Cross by which Christ our Pasch has been sacrificed is celebrated on the altar, the work of our redemption is carried out.” Pg. 343, #1364

I did not say this – the catholic catechism says it. But what does the Bible say? (Heb 6:5) And have tasted the good word of God, and the powers of the world to come, (Heb 6:6) If they shall fall away, to renew them again unto repentance; seeing they crucify to themselves the Son of God afresh, and put him to an open shame. The Bible directly contradicts what the catechism teaches here, my friend! How can you believe otherwise?

Jesus is our sacrifice, correct? (Heb 9:26) For then must he often have suffered since the foundation of the world: but now once in the end of the world hath he appeared to put away sin by the sacrifice of himself. We agree in that point. However, Paul also states that (Heb 10:10) By the which will we are sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all. and (Heb 9:12) Neither by the blood of goats and calves, but by his own blood he entered in once into the holy place, having obtained eternal redemption for us. (emphasis mine) Jesus’ sacrifice only needed to be once. He only had to enter once in the holy place on our behalf. The Bible specifically states that this sacrifice should not be done daily. Heb. 7:27 Who needeth not daily, as those high priests, to offer up sacrifice, first for his own sins, and then for the people’ s: for this he did once, when he offered up himself. (emphasis mine)

Yet the Catechism is adamant that:

“Every time this mystery is celebrated, ‘the work of our redemption is carried on’ …” Pg. 354, #1405

Jesus did all the work necessary to purchase our salvation when He died on the cross. No more work has ever been needed. The catholic church, however, wants their people to believe that it is Christ andthe sacrifice of the eucharist and they are one single sacrifice!

“The sacrifice of Christ and the sacrifice of the Eucharist are one single sacrifice.” Pg. 344 # 1367

The Bible states no where that Christ needs to be sacrificed anew every day – thousands of times throughout the world, in fact. To state otherwise is to say that salvation cannot be in Christ alone but in the offering daily of His death.

Once again, catholicism has added something to the very basic plan of salvation. It is their intention to keep the catholic in chains and bondage. The catholic religion is one of burden after burden being carried on the shoulders of the catholic. According to catholic doctrine, the catholic can never be freed of his burden of sin – he must even take it to purgatory to purge himself before entering heaven. No purging is necessary, my friend. Once you die, you either go to heaven or to hell. (Heb 9:27) And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment: (emphasis mine) Don’t you think that Paul would have had a perfect opportunity to talk about purgatory here? But yet, he stated that after your death, you are going to be judged by the One and Only Judge (2 Ti 4:1). Do you really want to take a chance with eternity? A wise man once said,

“Eternity is too long and hell fire is too hot for me not to be saved!”

I pray that these posts on catholicism are speaking to a dear catholic’s heart today. My prayer is that this will all be worth it if one catholic is snatched from the grips and burdensome weights of the catholic church. In salvation, the weight of my sin was lifted from my shoulders. I literally felt lighter because Christ had removed that burden and placed it onto Himself. His mercy on my soul cost Him His life. It was my sins that nailed Him to the cross and only salvation through Him can remove that sin from me. (Mat 11:28 ) Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. (Mat 11:29) Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. (Mat 11:30) For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.

Dear catholic, can you honestly say that you have total peace that you are going to heaven and that you do not carry a burden of sin on your shoulders? Can you honestly say that your sin is no longer on your own account but on Christ’s? Your knee will have to bow to Jesus Christ one day – not to Mary – not to anyone else, but to Him – and you will have to give an account for what you have chosen to believe in this life. (Rom 14:11) For it is written, As I live, saith the Lord, every knee shall bow to me, and every tongue shall confess to God. (Rom 14:12) So then every one of us shall give account of himself to God. Knowing this, can you say in your heart of hearts that you are burden free as Matt 11:28-30 promises? I know that I did not have that complete peace. But once I was born-again and made new in Christ, I personally experienced that perfect peace of no longer falling under condemnation. (Phil 4:7) And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus. The catholic church had me under condemnation with no hope unless I kept a bunch of rules, sacraments, etc.

Jesus does not say that He must be sacrificed every day and anew for your sins. He did not say that after you die, you have to be purged further to be able to enter heaven. (Joh 5:24) Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life. Quite the opposite, huh? Jesus said that once you hear the Word and believe in Him, you have eternal life from that moment on and you do not come into condemnation. I don’t know about you but that says we accept His sacrifice one time to me and that after I have been saved, I don’t need any further purging because Christ’s sacrifice was sufficient. (Rom 8:1) There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.

The catholic church is guilty of deceiving its followers. (Jud 1:4) For there are certain men crept in unawares, who were before of old ordained to this condemnation, ungodly men, turning the grace of our God into lasciviousness, and denying the only Lord God, and our Lord Jesus Christ. We do not deserve God’s grace. But praise the Lord that He died for us while we were yet sinners. Christ died once – for all sins. What will you do with this knowledge? Will you continue to believe what the catholic church has taught you? Or will you rely on God’s Holy Word and accept the gift that has been offered to you? It is a gift, my friend (John 3:16). It is not merited – it is free – you didn’t do anything to deserve the gift – it is yours for the taking. But you must do something with this gift. You must either take it into your heart or you must reject it.

Hymns – Day 4 – Alas and Did My Savior Bleed?

Isaac Watts was born in Southampton, England in 1674. He passed away in Stoke Newington, England in 1748. He is known as the Father of English Hymnody because he was the first popular English hymn writer. Many of his 750 hymns are still in use today – a couple are: “When I survey the wondrous cross” and “This is the day the Lord has made.”

Isaac’s father was a nonconformist and Isaac was raised on this. In fact, his father was jailed twice for his views. According to Wikipedia, Watts could not attend Oxford or Cambridge because of his Nonconformity so he attended the Dissenting Academy at Stoke Newington. After, he pastored a large independent church in London where he helped preachers in training. Isaac Watts’ beliefs were not the traditional nonconformist beliefs and were considered more nondenominational. In my biographical readings about him, it was not clearly outlined as to what he truly believed or practiced. His hymns, however, were quite clear. I am of the opinion that Watts’ nonconformity was more likely due to England’s 1662 Act of Uniformity and the church’s tradition. I am also of the opinion that he trusted in the Word of God rather than the traditions of man.

I absolutely love today’s hymn, Alas and Did My Savior Bleed because it totally describes what our precious Saviour went through on the cross and why. Anyone with an ounce of compassion cannot read all of these verses without tearing up!

Alas and Did My Savior Bleed?
Isaac Watts

Alas! and did my Savior bleed
And did my Sovereign die?
Would He devote that sacred head
For such a worm as I?

Refrain

At the cross, at the cross where I first saw the light,
And the burden of my heart rolled away,
It was there by faith I received my sight,
And now I am happy all the day!

Thy body slain, sweet Jesus, Thine—
And bathed in its own blood—
While the firm mark of wrath divine,
His Soul in anguish stood.

Was it for crimes that I had done
He groaned upon the tree?
Amazing pity! grace unknown!
And love beyond degree!

Well might the sun in darkness hide
And shut his glories in,
When Christ, the mighty Maker died,
For man the creature’s sin.

Thus might I hide my blushing face
While His dear cross appears,
Dissolve my heart in thankfulness,
And melt my eyes to tears.

But drops of grief can ne’er repay
The debt of love I owe:
Here, Lord, I give my self away
’Tis all that I can do.

Songs about the Blood of Christ are not popular today and will more than likely become less and less popular as we approach the Tribulation. The Word says that animal sacrifice will be resumed in the Temple during the end times. Therefore, man kind will try to remove the Blood of Christ altogether and go back to the old way which foreshadowed His work! Why would anyone want their sins merely covered instead of forgiven? Many churches today no longer sing songs about Christ’s shed blood. It is a shame because that is the cornerstone of Christianity. Without Christ’s shed blood, there is no remission of sin. And almost all things are by the law purged with blood; and without shedding of blood is no remission. (Heb 9:22) How can you do away with songs about the Blood when it is that very blood that saves us?

Let’s say there was a price on salvation, what would that price be? Could everyone afford to pay the price? Salvation would not be for everyone if it involved money – the rich would pay as little as they could for it and the poor would never be able to afford it. Praise God that this is not the case! Instead, God wanted all mankind to have an opportunity to follow Him. 1 Pet. 1:18-19, Forasmuch as ye know that ye were not redeemed with corruptible things, as silver and gold, from your vain conversation received by tradition from your fathers; (18 ) But with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot: (19) There is no one else who can claim this! No one else can say they have lived a sinless life. No one! For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God; (Rom 3:23)

I love the fact that God’s plan is seen throughout the Old Testament through the sacrificing of a spotless lamb. These sacrifices were a testimony to what was to come when Christ died on the cross. The blood of the spotless lambs could not forgive the sins of the Jews but it merely covered them until Christ’s final sacrifice. When Jesus therefore had received the vinegar, he said, It is finished: and he bowed his head, and gave up the ghost. (Joh 19:30) No more covering of sins with sacrifices were needed. The final sacrifice, the ultimate sacrifice, was made on the cross and no longer would man’s sin merely be just covered. Now man’s sins could be forgiven because of Christ’s perfect and sinless life.

Matt 27:51-53, And, behold, the veil of the temple was rent in twain from the top to the bottom; and the earth did quake, and the rocks rent; (51) And the graves were opened; and many bodies of the saints which slept arose, (52) And came out of the graves after his resurrection, and went into the holy city, and appeared unto many. (53) At the moment of that final sacrifice, the veil in the temple was torn in half. No longer would a high priest be needed nor would he be the only one to access the Holy of Holies. Now, all man could access Heaven through Christ, our High Priest. I love Heb. 9:25-28, Nor yet that he should offer himself often, as the high priest entereth into the holy place every year with blood of others; (25) For then must he often have suffered since the foundation of the world: but now once in the end of the world hath he appeared to put away sin by the sacrifice of himself. (26) And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment: (27) So Christ was once offered to bear the sins of many; and unto them that look for him shall he appear the second time without sin unto salvation. (9:28 ) What a beautiful picture!

Without the precious blood of Jesus Christ, there is no forgiveness of sins! Without being born again, one cannot be saved. Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God. (Joh 3:3) The born-again believer is the one who believes that Christ came to earth and lived a sinless life and shed His blood on the cross to become that perfect sacrifice for us. He also believes that Christ rose from the dead and now sits at the right hand of the Father. And I heard a loud voice saying in heaven, Now is come salvation, and strength, and the kingdom of our God, and the power of his Christ: for the accuser of our brethren is cast down, which accused them before our God day and night. (Rev 12:10)When ole slew foot accuses the born-again believer before God, Christ stands up and tells His Father that it is His blood that covers this Christian and the Father now only sees the righteousness of His Son.

Thank God we are not required to work our way to heaven! Thank God we are not allowed entrance only by our own merit for we would be doomed indeed! The perfect sacrifice of Christ is all we need to believe in. For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. (Joh 3:16) It is so simple, yet so many enter hell’s gates every second. This world is trying desperately to remove the blood from its services. They fail to realize that it is only by the Blood of Jesus Christ that entrance to heaven may be gained! Sin cannot enter heaven. And I said unto him, Sir, thou knowest. And he said to me, These are they which came out of great tribulation, and have washed their robes, and made them white in the blood of the Lamb. (Rev 7:14)

Isaac Watts truly possessed salvation as it is evident in his writings. Just today’s hymn alone shows us the degree of his beliefs. Watts’ anguish at his own sin and what Christ had to suffer to free him from this sin is clearly seen. Is our testimony for Christ today as evident as Isaac Watts? Can we honestly say:

Thus might I hide my blushing face
While His dear cross appears,
Dissolve my heart in thankfulness,
And melt my eyes to tears.
