The Anchored Soul – Day 7 – Re-calibrating Your Ears

In the rugged hills of Judea, a shepherd’s voice was everything. A flock of sheep could be mixed with others at a watering hole, but when their specific shepherd called, only his sheep would lift their heads and follow. They didn’t just recognize a voice; they recognized the voice that provided, protected, and loved them.

To say “The Lord is my shepherd” is an exclusive declaration of belonging only to one shepherd.

One Shepherd, One Voice

Jesus said in:

The world is filled with “stranger voices.” Modern culture, AI, social media, competing philosophies, and other religious teachings constantly call out, promising fulfillment, peace, or a different path to God. But as one of the sheep of the Good Shepherd, your ears are tuned to a specific voice, the voice of Truth.

Why We Refuse Other Voices

We don’t reject other “gods” or teachings out of narrow-mindedness, but out of recognition. When you have known the care of the one true Shepherd who laid down His life for the sheep, every other voice is empty.

  • Other gods cannot offer the “still waters” of true rest for our soul.
  • Other teachings cannot guide you through the “valley of the shadow of death” with actual authority over the grave.
  • Other paths lead to “want and emptiness,” but in Christ, you have everything you need.

The Commitment of the Sheep

To follow Christ as your Shepherd means making a conscious choice to become deaf to the temptations of the world. When a teaching contradicts His Word, or a “new” spirituality tries to lead you away from the cross, you respond like the sheep in the field: you do not recognize that voice. You do not respond. You stay close to the Shepherd who knows you personally – He knows your name!

Today, rest in the security that you belong to Him. He is leading you, and as long as you follow His voice alone, through the Word, you will never lose your way.

Are there any “stranger voices” you’ve been listening to lately? How can you recalibrate your ears to hear only the Shepherd’s voice?

The Anchored Soul – Day 5 – The Complete Care of the Personal Shepherd

This Psalm is an insightful reminder that we are never alone, as it depicts God as a personal and extremely attentive Shepherd who takes full responsibility for our well-being. Whether you are currently in a season of rest or walking through a dark valley, this passage offers timeless comfort and assurance.

The Shepherd’s Provision (Verses 1-3)

The Psalm opens with “The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.” This sets the stage for a life of contentment and trust. It reminds us that:

  • True Rest is a Gift: He “makes” us lie down in green pastures, offering rest for our souls in a world that is constantly busy.
  • Soul Restoration: He leads us beside still waters to restore and refresh us when we are weary. This reminds me of when Elijah was trying to escape from Jezebel. Elijah became disheartened and sat under this tree. He wanted to die at this point. But God, through an angel, provided him with baked bread and water to sustain him. There, Elijah found rest and was restored.
  • Right Guidance: He guides us along paths of righteousness, ensuring our lives bring honor to His name. Whether we follow Him or not, is up to us.

The Shepherd’s Presence (Verse 4)

Even in the “valley of the shadow of death,” David declares, “I will fear no evil; for thou art with me.” This shift from talking about God to talking to Him. This shows us how relationship with God grows in difficult times.

  • No Fear in the Dark: We don’t have to fear because His presence is constant, even when we cannot see the way out.
  • Comforting Authority: His rod and staff, tools for protection and guidance, provide security and comfort.

The Shepherd’s Promise (Verses 5-6)

The psalm ends with a transition from the field to a banquet table, which results in abundant blessing.

  • Honored Guest: God prepares a table before us in the presence of our enemies, anointing us with joy and filling our cups to overflowing.
  • Pursued by Grace: Instead of judgment, goodness and mercy “follow” us like faithful sheepdogs all the days of our lives.
  • Eternal Home: We have the ultimate hope of dwelling in the house of the Lord forever.

Which part of the Shepherd’s care do you need to lean into today: His provision, His presence, His promise, or all three?
