Matthew 5:13-17 Ye are the salt of the earth: but if the salt have lost his savour, wherewith shall it be salted? it is thenceforth good for nothing, but to be cast out, and to be trodden under foot of men. 14 Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid. 15 Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house. 16 Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven. 17 Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil.

Jesus gave His followers two simple but powerful descriptions: “Ye are the salt of the earth” and “Ye are the light of the world.” Salt and light are completely different, yet both have an unmistakable effect on their surroundings. Salt works quietly, often unseen, while light makes what is hidden visible.

There is something beautiful in that picture of the Christian life. We are called to live in this world without becoming of this world. Like salt, our influence may sometimes be unseen, quietly preserving truth and bringing the character of Christ into the places God has placed us. Like light, we should make Christ visible through our words, our choices, our love, and our faith.

Scientifically, there is even a fascinating connection: sodium—the “Na” in sodium chloride (salt)—can produce a brilliant yellow light when energized. What a beautiful reminder that when our lives are surrendered to the Lord and His Holy Spirit is working within us, His light can shine through us.

Jesus said, “Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid.” We don’t have to strive to become something extraordinary. We simply need to remain close to the One who is Light. Let us be faithful to our calling—to preserve what is good, illuminate what is true, and point a darkened world toward Jesus.

Lord, help us to be faithful salt and shining light wherever You place us. May our lives quietly influence others for good, while our words and actions clearly point them to You. Keep us from blending into the darkness, and let the light of Christ shine brightly through us. Amen.
