Do Not Be Afraid – Day 11

Joshua 1:9 Have not I commanded thee? Be strong and of a good courage; be not afraid, neither be thou dismayed: for the LORD thy God is with thee whithersoever thou goest.

In this book of the Bible, God commissions Joshua to take the place of Moses and lead His people into the Promised Land. It would be a mission of great significance and divine purpose. Joshua has been by Moses’ side for years, witnessing the miraculous work of God, experiencing His provisions, and seeing the way Moses led the people firsthand. Now, as he is put in charge of all these people, he faces an enormous challenge that is anything but easy. There may have been some trepidation on Joshua’s part because in this chapter alone, God tells Joshua not to be afraid and to have courage. With around two million people who had crossed the Red Sea with Moses, Joshua must have felt that this immense responsibility was daunting. He was now charged not only to lead them into a new land filled with opportunities but also to guide them spiritually and strengthen their faith in God. We don’t stop to think about how Joshua must have felt. The weight of leadership must have pressed heavily on Joshua’s shoulders as he prepared to embark on this journey, knowing that the destiny of an entire people rested on his guidance and leadership.

Isn’t it just like the Lord to encourage us when we are about to embark on a difficult mission in our lives? In those moments of uncertainty and fear, we can sense His presence, reminding us that we are never alone. He is such a compassionate God, full of love and understanding for our struggles, and He never fails to provide the strength we need. As we face challenges, His whispers of comfort and reassurance echo in our hearts, instilling hope and courage to persevere through our difficulties. In every trial, He continues to be our steadfast Father, ensuring us that we can rise above our limitations and trust in Him.

Hebrews 13:5  Let your conversation be without covetousness; and be content with such things as ye have: for he hath said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee.

Why Not Now?

No one knows what tomorrow will bring. It’s a mystery to everyone. No clairvoyant can tell you what tomorrow has in store with 100% accuracy. Only God knows! The wonderful thing about that is that He has a purpose for each and every human being on this earth.

Ecclesiastes 3:1  To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven:

There is nothing that catches God by surprise. Neither your heartache, your pain, or your financial dilemma, is unknown to Him. In fact, He understands your struggles more than anyone else ever could. He is right there each and every second of the day, offering His presence as a source of strength and comfort. (Hebrews 13:5b) There is immense comfort in knowing that the Lord will never leave us nor forsake us! His unwavering presence assures us that we are never alone in our trials; instead, we are surrounded in His love and grace, guiding us through even the darkest valleys; He is elevating our spirits in times of despair.

Today’s hymn was introduced to me years ago. It provides such encouragement knowing that God will perfect what He has begun in my heart.

Philippians 1:6  Being confident of this very thing, that he which hath begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ:

I hope today’s devotional will encourage your heart in the midst of your storm.

Has God Departed?

Judges 16:20  And she said, The Philistines be upon thee, Samson. And he awoke out of his sleep, and said, I will go out as at other times before, and shake myself. And he wist not that the LORD was departed from him.

If you are a born-again Christian, you know when you are not walking with the Lord because the fellowship with Him is not the same; it’s not as sweet. But with Samson, it was a different story … he didn’t even know that God’s power had left him! His life of compromise led to this big failure. It started in Judges 14. Let’s look at the compromises he made:

  • He lusted after a woman in Judges 14:1-2
  • Did not honor his mother and his father’s wishes in Judges 14:3
  • Disobeyed that Law in Judges 14:5 (he went into the vineyards); killed a lion, touching a carcass in Judges 14:8
  • Justified his sin by sharing it with his parents Judges 14:9

Here a little, there a little … he allowed compromise into his life to the point where he was oblivious to the impact. Oh how very sad! But before we get too judgmental, aren’t we the same? This type of compromise is what gets a Christian man’s eyes to wander, then end up in divorce. Bonhoeffer once said, “Judging others makes us blind, whereas love is illuminating. By judging others we blind ourselves to our own evil and to the grace which others are just as entitled to as we are.”

Praise the Lord that once a person is born again, the Holy Spirit comes to live within that person. He never leaves us nor will He ever forsake us. That’s a promise! Even if the relationship between parent and child goes through moments of hindered fellowship, we know that the child will always be their child. That child will always have his parents’ DNA within him. He cannot deny it. The same goes with our relationship with God. We may be disobedient, but we never lose God’s DNA in our lives! 💙💙💙 He never leaves us, nor will He ever forsake us.

Heb 13:5  Let your conversation be without covetousness; and be content with such things as ye have: for he hath said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee.

We must be willing, however, to follow Him without compromise, as did Samson. Samson started and ended strong, but the compromises in the middle speak with more volume. After all, when you remember Samson’s account, what do you remember? I remember how Delilah caused his strength to cease by cutting off his hair.

Today’s hymn describes the sweet relationship between Father and every born-again believer. The words are sweet as honey!

Christ lives within every born again believer. You receive His Spirit within you and thus having a new life! Salvation is a choice. Exactly what have you got to lose if you choose salvation? You will go to Heaven at the Rapture or at your death if you are saved. If you believe the lie that God would not send anyone to Hell, then you will go there. God is a righteous Judge and He will send you there, but only because it was your choice. Do You Feel Alone Sometimes?

Then shalt thou call, and the LORD shall answer; thou shalt cry, and he shall say, Here I am. (Isa 58:9a)

Despite the hustle and bustle of the world around us, miles of traffic jams, and crowded stores, it is amazing how many people in this world suffer from loneliness. Man was not created to be alone. And the LORD God said, It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him an help meet for him. (Gen 2:18) No matter how much of a loner one is, that person has a need for human contact at some point or another. Most are not loners, however, so human contact is a vital ingredient for healthy emotions. Loneliness left unchecked leads to despair.

As a born-again believer, I am encouraged by God’s Holy Word because He deals with this very subject over and over. God knew from the beginning that man could not be alone, and that he would suffer from loneliness. So much so, He included the beautiful Book of Psalms for encouragement and countless other verses throughout His Word. Our Father knows our needs because He created us. He knows everything about us. We cannot hide anything from Him, including our loneliness. [To the chief Musician, A Psalm of David.] O LORD, thou hast searched me, and known me. (Psa 139:1) I stand amazed that our God knows all of us in this intimate way. God has searched each one of us and knows us!

Even when we are at our lowest, the Lord is right there to lift us up through His Word. I think of David when he made this statement in Psa 27:10, When my father and my mother forsake me, then the Lord will take me up. David knew that his God would never forsake him. The Lord reassures His children over and over throughout His Word that He is faithful. … for he hath said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee. (Heb 13:5b) Again, He assures us in Isa. 42:16, …These things will I do unto them, and not forsake them.

When we need comfort and reassurance, He promises to be there for us. I will not leave you comfortless: I will come to you. John 14:18 Our Heavenly Father is there every moment of the way in our Christian walk. And, behold, I am with thee, and will keep thee in all places whither thou goest, and will bring thee again into this land; for I will not leave thee, until I have done that which I have spoken to thee of. (Gen 28:15) God spoke to countless people in the Old Testament with words of encouragement. However, those same words can assure us that because He spoke to them in this manner, He will speak to us through His Word with the same impact.

We may fall asleep at night and forget the day’s trials and burdens but our God never sleeps and is ever watching out for us. Behold, he that keepeth Israel shall neither slumber nor sleep. (Psa 121:4) Does that not bring you comfort? You are not alone, my friend. No matter how empty your house is, you are not alone. No matter if there is no one sitting with you in your car, you are not alone. Your Heavenly Father has placed in you His Precious Holy Spirit. He comforts you, teaches you and points you to Christ through His Holy Word. And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever; (Joh 14:16) (Emphasis mine).

How can you overcome your loneliness? Get in the Word, oh Christian. The Holy Spirit is waiting to bring that precious comfort to you. His comfort resides within the pages of your Bible but you must open it to receive it. But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you. (Joh 14:26) We get refreshment and encouragement within the pages of our Bible as we are drawn and taught by the Holy Spirit. How full of mercy is our Father! He knows every fiber of our being and provides living water for us to walk away refreshed. Our loneliness dissipates as we soak up His Word and see once again the light of day.

Once we are refreshed, we are commanded to go out and be a friend to someone. A man that hath friends must shew himself friendly: (Pro 18:24a) No one can feel alone when they are focused on helping others. There are people out there in need, whether physical, emotional or spiritual. God can use a believer who has overcome loneliness to minister to a lonely world. So many are lonely out there – won’t you let the Friend of all friends be your example? and there is a friend that sticketh closer than a brother. (Pro 18:24b) Do you feel friendless? When you are born again, oh Christian, God calls you His friend. Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends. (Joh 15:13) Jesus paid the ultimate price to be your friend. You are never alone.

Treat your loneliness today with a good dose of refreshing time in the Word; then put feet to your refreshing time, and spend time with someone who is lonely. God will use your trials to minister to another and bring glory to His Name.

God, Are You Listening?

Isaiah 59:1  Behold, the LORD’S hand is not shortened, that it cannot save; neither his ear heavy, that it cannot hear:

Psalm 120:1 A Song of degrees. In my distress I cried unto the LORD, and he heard me.

God always has an attentive ear! Today’s verses encourage the believer that despite our most difficult times, we can know that when we cry out to the Lord, He will hear us!

I love how the verse opens up with God’s arm is not shortened that He cannot save! That’s the first step to having God’s listening ear! Salvation is key to a two-way communication with God. God doesn’t hear the prayer of a sinner except the prayer is one asking for His salvation. Then God listens to everything we speak with our mouth and with our heart!

John 9:31  Now we know that God heareth not sinners: but if any man be a worshipper of God, and doeth his will, him he heareth.

The Christian is not alone, even in the darkest of situations. There is nowhere we can go where God isn’t already there.

Psalm 139:7 Whither shall I go from thy spirit? or whither shall I flee from thy presence?

No matter how discouraged or weary we get, the Lord is always there – He knows what we are going through – He promises to hear our cries and provide us with exactly what we need to make it through our trial. He will lift us up in times when we are overwhelmed by life. At times, He even carries us through.

Some of you are battling cancer; some are battling chronic illnesses; and others are battling broken homes. You are not alone! Do not be weary. Know that your Heavenly Father will never leave you.

I am always encouraged when I know that I am not alone, and that there is someone to share my burden with. The Lord desires to carry our burdens for us – He desires that we turn to Him when we are at the end of our rope.

Matthew 11:28 Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.

Our Lord and Saviour promises us rest from our burdens and cares. Christian, turn to the only One who can truly help you when you are weary. He is the only one who can solve your problems! Don’t give in to Satan’s attempts to drag you down. Don’t give in to his lies that God does not hear you.

God, Are You Listening?

Peace Through Troubled Times – Ungrateful

2Ti 3:1-2  This know also, that in the last days perilous times shall come.  (2)  For men shall be lovers of their own selves, covetous, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy,

It doesn’t surprise me that the sin of unthankfulness is prevalent in these end times. Have you seen a more ungrateful people than those in America today? They loot stores – not for food or necessities, but for televisions, brand name items, cell phones!

This world is filled with ungrateful people! People who are not thankful for the blessings they have. They always want more. People are given a gift and do not say thank you. It’s as if they believe they deserve the gift! How sad is that? My parents taught me to say thank you no matter how I felt about what was given to me. They taught me to be grateful for what we had, and that was not much! I grew up in a tar paper shed that my father bought and did the best he could for our family. It wasn’t until I was in my teenage years that he put siding on the house. Was I ungrateful or unthankful? Absolutely not! We had food on the table and clothes on our backs! Our family was together and that is all that mattered.

Today’s post is short but the few verses shared are to the point. This generation is not teaching their children to say thank you. How very sad! Children need to be taught to be content with what they have. The more you give children, the less content they will become. It has been proven that children with less toys are more creative. The more they have, the less they use their imagination.

1Ti 6:6-7  But godliness with contentment is great gain.  (7)  For we brought nothing into this world, and it is certain we can carry nothing out.
