Do Not Be Afraid – Day 1

The first time we see a Bible verse exhorting us not to be afraid is found in today’s verse. God called Abram out of his country to go out to a land he had never been to, which undoubtedly required immense faith and courage. As Abram embarked on this journey into the unknown, he was not only leaving behind familiar surroundings, but also stepping into a future filled with uncertainty and promise. God had promised Abram a land for his family and descendants, a covenant that would become central to the identity of God’s chosen people. Genesis 15:1 comes as a result of Abram rescuing his nephew Lot and his family and goods from those who had taken Lot captive. In this moment, God reassures Abram of His protection and guidance, reminding him that even in challenging times, he is not alone and has a divine purpose ahead. This narrative serves as a powerful reminder that faith often requires us to venture into the unknown, trusting in God’s plans for our lives and for those we hold dear.

This verse is the first appearance of the phrase “word of the LORD” (Jesus Christ … see John 1:1-5) in the Bible. It is not a coincidence that it is also the first time that the words “fear not” appear! Isn’t it just like the Lord to show up and tell Abram not to fear, and offering him reassurance in moments of uncertainty so that believers can all benefit from it thousands of years later? This divine intervention serves is a powerful reminder that God’s presence can cast out our fears. The second half of the verse tells us why Abram wasn’t to be afraid: God tells him that HE is Abram’s shield and his exceeding great reward. This declaration not only reassures Abram but also emphasizes the protective and rewarding nature of God’s relationship with those who trust in Him. What an encouragement to us all! Just as God was Abram’s shield, He is our shield and protector in our own lives, standing guard against the trials and tribulations that may come our way. As well, He will fight our battles (1 Samuel 17:47b), helping us navigate through our challenges with strength and courage. As well, we shall be exceedingly rewarded afterwards, just as Abram was exceedingly rewarded, reminding us that faithfulness to God yields incredible blessings.

We may wonder why we are going through certain trials: trials we cannot fix in our own strength and abilities. Each challenge seems to test our resolve and push us beyond our limits, leaving us feeling overwhelmed and uncertain. However, we can trust that the Lord knows the end of the trial and His efforts have been accomplished. It is in these times of struggle that our faith is deepened, shaping us into stronger individuals. Trust in Him as you walk through the fiery furnace, knowing that these experiences are refining you and preparing you for a greater purpose. Don’t rush to bring an end to your trial because your best efforts will produce a flawed outcome. Instead, trust in the perfect God through the journey and learn from it. Since He is perfect, His efforts are perfect, guiding us along the path He has set before us, revealing His wisdom and love in every step we take. (Proverbs 3:5-6)

Protect Me, Oh God!

Gen 15:1  After these things the word of the LORD came unto Abram in a vision, saying, Fear not, Abram: I am thy shield, and thy exceeding great reward.

Sometimes it seems we are hit from every side, doesn’t it? The devil does not play fair. If he can distract the Christian from leaning on the Lord, he will. It’s no coincidence that the Apostle Peter compared the devil as a roaring lion. (1 Peter 5:8) If you’ve been a believer even for a short time, you will experience the devil’s ravenous attempts in your life. He wants you absorbed with your problems so that your light for Jesus is dimmed.

Are you at the point in your spiritual walk where your light is now just glowing embers? Have you ever noticed that when you’re walking on the beach, your feet sink into the sand and you’re not as steady? However, if you dig your feet deeper into the sand, you are steadier. The deeper in the stand you plant yourself, the steadier you become. Oh Christian, the deeper you dig into the Scriptures, the steadier you will become in your journey!

This is your mission! Dig your feet in and stand firm on God’s Word. Review those verses that have encouraged you in the past in your head and let them encourage you again. It is your shield against fiery darts. This is why the Bible is called the Living Word of God! It breathes and moves within the believer, and restores spiritual health!

Your faith is at its weakest when you are not armed with the Bible. We are armed each time we start our day in God’s Word. We are armed each time something happens during the day that brings verses to mind that we read just that morning!

Not only did God tell Abram that He was his shield, but God also said that He was Abram’s great reward. What was that reward? God made Abram the father of all nations. Abram, now called Abraham, would not only be the father of the Jewish people but of the Gentile nations as well. Anyone whose salvation is based on faith is born into Abraham’s family! Once we are born again, we also have a great reward. That reward is that our sin debt has been paid in full by the Lord Jesus Christ and we are no longer under condemnation!

Rom 8:1  There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.

Once we are born again, we are in Christ Jesus. Every day we fight a battle with the flesh. You know you are in the battle because the Holy Spirit speaks to your heart! He warns you and guides you to walk after Him and not the flesh. Are you feeling weak and discouraged? Pick up your shield and dig your feet in!
