Day-by-Day – Day 17 – Never Changing

101_1373

~Hebrews 13:8 – Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and to day, and for ever.

I love this verse!  No matter how much my environment changes, or people around me, I can depend on the Lord being stedfast, faithful and never changing!  The way God was in Old Testament time and years gone by is the same way He is today … and the same way He will be tomorrow.

Thou changest not, Thy compassions they fail not. As Thou hast been Thou forever wilt be.

…Great is Thy Faithfulness, Lord unto me.

God’s compassion, His stability, and His mercy bring comfort to the Christian.

~Lamentations 3:22 It is of the LORD’S mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not.

Rejoice this morning and be thankful that the same God who helped Noah, Esther, Paul, Jonathan Edwards, and Charles Spurgeon, is the same God who is mindful of you today!

Day-by-Day – Day 16 – Tried and Proven

101_1383

~James 1:12 Blessed is the man that endureth temptation: for when he is tried, he shall receive the crown of life, which the Lord hath promised to them that love him.

What will happen when you are tried for your life and what you did with it? I was tried on April 1st, 1980. That is the day when in my heart I stood before God, my Judge, and admitted to Him that I was a sinner in need of salvation. I accepted Christ’s perfect work on the cross, His death, His burial and His resurrection. In return, Christ’s blood covers my sin and I am now a child of the King! Christ is now my Advocate, my perfect Attorney, and I am no longer on trial for my sins because He has paid the price for my punishment.

On that wonderful day, I earned the crown of life, which Christ promised to me now that I love Him. I thought I loved Him before my salvation but I did not know Him.

It reminded me of the parable that Jesus preached:

~Matthew 7:21-27 Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven. Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works? And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity. Therefore whosoever heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them, I will liken him unto a wise man, which built his house upon a rock: And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell not: for it was founded upon a rock.) And every one that heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them not, shall be likened unto a foolish man, which built his house upon the sand: And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell: and great was the fall of it.

Notice the underscored portion of this text. Many will tell Jesus that they prophesied in His name, cast out devils, and done many wonderful works in His name. However, Jesus says they are workers of iniquity! One must ask himself who these people are and why they are not good enough to enter Heaven! They appeared to do the right things, however, those things were obviously not good enough.

The verses afterward talk about the person who builds his house on the rock! The rock is not a church or a person but is in fact Jesus Christ:

~1 Corinthians 10:4 And did all drink the same spiritual drink: for they drank of that spiritual Rock that followed them: and that Rock was Christ.

~Deuteronomy 32:4 He is the Rock, his work is perfect: for all his ways are judgment: a God of truth and without iniquity, just and right is he.

How does one build his house on the Rock? The Word is revealed to us at the hour of our salvation. God sees to it:

~Romans 10:8-13 But what saith it? The word is nigh thee, even in thy mouth, and in thy heart: that is, the word of faith, which we preach; That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. For the scripture saith, Whosoever believeth on him shall not be ashamed. For there is no difference between the Jew and the Greek: for the same Lord over all is rich unto all that call upon him. For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.

It is not joining a particular church – it is not keeping rules and laws. God says in verse 8 that the Word is near us – He puts it in our hearts (the desire). That is faith – when we believe the Gospel sincerely, and confess it with our mouths, then we are saved. The Word says that whosoever (that means me) calls upon the name of the Lord shall be saved. It is not a little prayer-ette, but a sincere calling upon the God of salvation! When this is done, then your house (your faith) is built on the Rock, Jesus Christ, and your faith is solid!

Day-by-Day – Day 15 – Fear

101_1383

~Proverbs 14:26 In the fear of the LORD is strong confidence: and his children shall have a place of refuge..

Noah Webster defines fear as:

In good men, the fear of God is a holy awe or reverence of God and his laws, which springs from a just view and real love of the divine character, leading the subjects of it to hate and shun every thing that can offend such a holy being, and inclining them to aim at perfect obedience.

Before salvation, I did not possess this type of fear. I did not consider God in this light because I did not love Him as I should. I did not have a reverence for His laws. I knew they existed but did not feel compelled to obey them.

After salvation, however, the Holy Spirit placed this fear in my heart. Now I strive for perfect obedience. I fail miserably but the key is that I am striving to be obedient. When I do fail, I know:

~1 John 1:7-9 But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin. If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.9) If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

We Christians must simplify our lives or lose untold treasures on earth and in eternity. Modern civilization is so complex as to make the devotional life all but impossible. The need for solitude and quietness was never greater than it is today.

Day-by-Day – Day 14 – Strength

101_1383

~Psalm 28:7 The LORD is my strength and my shield; my heart trusted in him, and I am helped: therefore my heart greatly rejoiceth; and with my song will I praise him.

When I am struggling with life’s issues, I know that my Lord will give me the strength I need to overcome. He is also my shield which will protect me from the enemy succeeding in causing me to feel overwhelmed! When I trust in the Lord, He helps me! Knowing this causes my heart to rejoice – not just a bit, but greatly!!! As a result, my lips sing a song of praise to Him!!

The Lighthouse

There’s a Lighthouse on the hillside
That over looks life’s sea
When I’m tossed it sends out a light
That I might see
And the light that shines in darkness now
will safely lead me on
If it wasn’t for The Lighthouse
My ship would sail no more

And I thank God for The Lighthouse
I owe my life to him
For JESUS Is The Lighthouse
And from the rocks of sin
He has shone a light around me
That I could clearly see
If it wasn’t for The Lighthouse
Where would this ship be?

Everybody that lives around us
says tear that Lighthouse down
The big ships, They don’t sail this way anymore
There’s no need of it standing round
But then my mind goes back to that stormy night
When just in time I saw the light
Oh the light from that old Lighthouse
That stands up there on the hill

And I thank God for The Lighthouse
I owe my life to him
For JESUS Is The Lighthouse
And from the rocks of sin
He has shone a light around me
That I could clearly see
If it wasn’t for The Lighthouse
Where would this ship be?

If it wasn’t for The Lighthouse
Where would this ship be?

Day-by-Day – Day 13 – Water

101_1314

~Isaiah 58:11
And the LORD shall guide thee continually, and satisfy thy soul in drought, and make fat thy bones: and thou shalt be like a watered garden, and like a spring of water, whose waters fail not.

Our Heavenly Father promises to guide us and He does this through His Word and prayer. Not only does He guide us but He promises to satisfy our souls when we feel spiritually dry. He promises to make our spiritual bones fat and to water us through His Word.

~Revelation 21:6 And he said unto me, It is done. I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end. I will give unto him that is athirst of the fountain of the water of life freely.

~Revelation 21:6 And he said unto me, It is done. I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end. I will give unto him that is athirst of the fountain of the water of life freely.

~Revelation 22:17 And the Spirit and the bride say, Come. And let him that heareth say, Come. And let him that is athirst come. And whosoever will, let him take the water of life freely.

Notice the word “freely”?  It goes right back to that free gift that God gave us through Christ and not through anything that we can do.

~Ephesians 2:8  For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:

It is always true that an encounter with God brings wonderment and awe!

Day-by-Day – Day 12 – A Gift

101_1374

~James 1:17 Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning.

Noah Webster defines the word gift as:

A present; any thing given or bestowed; any thing, the property of which is voluntarily transferred by one person to another without compensation; a donation. It is applicable to any thing movable or immovable.

No matter how hard you try to add something to salvation, you have to argue with the word “gift.” God chose this word for a reason. I find it interesting that the word “gift” appears 33 times in the New Testament – which happens to be the age Christ was when He died. Is this a coincidence? Jesus Christ is the perfect gift. He paid the price – He paid it all – we cannot add or take away from this gift.

Day-by-Day – Day 11 – My Help

101_13801

~Psalm 40:17 But I am poor and needy; yet the Lord thinketh upon me: thou art my help and my deliverer; make no tarrying, O my God.

My heart is overwhelmed at the thought that God thinks about me! The God of the universe, Creator and King has time for me.  God loves me and knows me by name.

~John 10:3  To him the porter openeth; and the sheep hear his voice: and he calleth his own sheep by name, and leadeth them out.

Thank You, Lord!

Day-by-Day – Day 10 – Darkness?

101_1403

~1 Peter 2:9 But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light.

The born-again Christian is considered “crazy” according to the world.  Christians are portrayed as lunatics in movies.  Television portrays Christians as idiots.  It is quite infuriating.  However, Peter said that Christians are a peculiar people.  We are different from the world – or at least we should be.

Am I walking the walk or merely talking the talk?  Many say they are Christians but they do not act any differently than their neighbor.  Many sit in pews at church on Sunday but come Monday, they act just like everyone else at work.  Peter emphasizes that the Christian has been called out of darkness into Christ’s marvellous light.   The Christian should be changing and becoming more like Jesus with each passing day.

~2 Timothy 2:20-21  But in a great house there are not only vessels of gold and of silver, but also of wood and of earth; and some to honour, and some to dishonour.  If a man therefore purge himself from these, he shall be a vessel unto honour, sanctified, and meet for the master’s use, and prepared unto every good work.

Paul encourages us to purge ourselves of worldliness and sin – yielding ourselves to the Holy Spirit’s convicting  power in our lives.  When we yield to Him, we become vessels of gold and silver.  We honor God with our lives.  Let the world make fun of us.  Our goal is not to please them but to please the Master.

Day-by-Day – Day 9 – Love

101_1381

~John 13:34 A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another.

God’s love is entirely different than the love that we feel for our families and friends. His love goes beyond what we mere mortals comprehend the meaning to be. So much so, that He sent His Son to die for us before we could “clean up our acts.”

~Romans 5:8 But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.

Love is a word of “action.” God showed His love toward us by sending Jesus to die for us while we were yet sinners! He did not wait for us to do better. His love demanded action and He showed His love by dying for us so that we would not have to pay the penalty! Oh what love! Christ died for those who hated Him. He loved them despite their hatred of Him. And so He commands us to do the same.

~Luke 6:35 But love ye your enemies, and do good, and lend, hoping for nothing again; and your reward shall be great, and ye shall be the children of the Highest: for he is kind unto the unthankful and to the evil.

I have seen an increase in Christ haters as well as haters of those who follow Him. Therefore, we are all the more accountable to this verse. Let’s show whose children we really are today!

Day-by-Day – Day 8 – Trusting

101_1337

~Psalm 9:10And they that know thy name will put their trust in thee: for thou, LORD, hast not forsaken them that seek thee.

The world says that a good way to know if you trust someone is to turn around and fall backwards into that person’s arms. We’ve all done this at one time or another right?  We are so willing to trust another human being to this extent but do we trust God this way?  Do we trust God with what seems impossible in our lives?  Do we trust God with the day-to-day struggles?

This Psalm blesses me because it continues to say that the Lord does not forsake those who seek Him.  God is faithful and is not to be compared to a human being who makes mistakes.  God promises to never forsake us, therefore, He will never forsake us.  We can count on Him to help us through whatever trial, illness or difficulty we are experiencing.  What comfort this is to my heart!
