Why A Rock?

2 Samuel 22:3 The God of my rock; in him will I trust: he is my shield, and the horn of my salvation, my high tower, and my refuge, my saviour; thou savest me from violence.

The Bible uses the symbolism of a “rock” to refer to God? A rock signifies strength, stability, and permanence. These are qualities that are essential in understanding the nature of God. Just as a rock withstands the test of time and the forces of nature, God is portrayed as unchanging and reliable amid the uncertainties of life. This image offers us a sense of safety and security, as we can trust in God’s unwavering support during difficult times.

It’s interesting to note that in ancient cultures, rocks were often seen as foundational elements of shelter and protection, emphasizing the idea that God serves as a refuge for those seeking solace and guidance. The metaphor of God as a rock serves to encourage faithfulness, reminding the faithful that, like a rock, God provides a solid foundation upon which they can build their lives and endure challenges.

Another interesting tidbit is that many biblical end-time scholars believe that God will provide a place made of rock during the Tribulation in what some believe to be Petra. This site, known for its stunning rock-hewn architecture and natural defenses, has been a point of intrigue for many who study prophecy. If it is to be Petra, isn’t it like God to use rocks as a reminder of His steadfastness and refuge?

Revelation 12:6 And the woman fled into the wilderness, where she hath a place prepared of God, that they should feed her there a thousand two hundred and threescore days.

The symbolism of a solid foundation amidst our chaotic lives reflects the unchanging nature of His promises. I don’t know about you, but this gives me an overwhelming sense of security. I know that when I seek shelter in Him during troubled times, I can trust God to be my solid foundation. Such a promise serves as a spiritual testament that even in the most tumultuous of circumstances, there is a sanctuary to be found.

Is there anything in your life that can promise you such a sanctuary? Do you find comfort and strength from the world, or is it merely a distraction from the longings of your heart? There is no perfect human being who can flawlessly provide this, with all of their limitations. However, there is a perfect God who loves you unconditionally and desires to be your refuge in times of trouble. The Lord’s presence offers a sanctuary that transcends the chaos of life, a place where you can find peace and solace. When you choose to seek Him diligently and open your heart to His guidance, you will discover that His love is unwavering and ever supportive. This provides a sanctuary that your spirit yearns amidst the trials of the world.

How Personal Is God In Your Life?

(2 Samuel 22:3) The God of my rock; in him will I trust: he is my shield, and the horn of my salvation, my high tower, and my refuge, my saviour; thou savest me from violence.

(Psalm 18:46) The LORD liveth; and blessed be my rock; and let the God of my salvation be exalted.

Today’s devotional is geared toward the Christian who is struggling to make God personal in his life. It’s easy to find Scriptures dealing with verses containing personal pronouns; in fact, a closer examination reveals a wealth of Scriptures waiting to be discovered. All we have to do is a simple Bible software search, which can uncover verses that ring true with our everyday experiences and challenges. In each of the verses you find, you can apply them to yourself and grade your understanding and feeling of God’s presence in your journey. For example, when reflecting on 2 Samuel 22:3, I see how personal this verse can be if I apply it to my life: it serves as a powerful reminder that God is not just some distant figure but an intimate protector and refuge in all of my times of trouble. Each verse that we meditate on can help bridge that gap, allowing us to develop a deeper and more intimate relationship with the Lord. By consciously integrating these Scriptures into our lives, we can have that sense of closeness with God that transforms our daily walk of faith.

  • (2 Samuel 22:3) “The God of my rock; in him will I trust: ” – Is God the rock in my life? Remember the parable that Jesus taught about building your house upon a rock in Matthew 7:24-27? My “religion” or “faith” is wavering if its doctrine is not based on the Scriptures, solely. Anything added to salvation that is not found in the Bible is building your faith’s foundation on the sand. So is God my rock in my spiritual life? This is very personal to me because the firm foundation of the rock gives me assurance that I can trust God with everything the Scriptures reveal to me.
  • “he is my shield” – When I think of a shield, I think of something that protects me from harm. It could be as simple as the windshield in my car; or a shield used in battle: both provide protection. How can God be a personal shield to me? When I am tempted to sin, I can count on God’s Word to help me to overcome it. I bring to my memory Bible verses that I can concentrate on and the temptation to sin is crushed! (Psa 119:11) Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee. I may not have the Bible verse to memory, but I can “semi” quote it which God uses. How personal of a God is that??? He provides me with that shield to ward of the enemy’s attacks! It doesn’t get any more personal than that!
  • “the horn of my salvation” – In the Bible, the horn represents strength and power. It is the main defense of any animal that has them. The musical instrument was used as late as the Civil War to call and direct soldiers in battle. Salvation is our only defense (the horn) against losing to the prince of the power of the air! A true born-again believer strives to live life according to Christ’s teachings. In so doing, our salvation keeps us and sustains us as children of the King! We no longer have to give in to sin; we have the horn of salvation that allows us to win the battle over sin!
  • “my high tower” – This happens to be one of my personal favorites. A high tower gives you a vantage point over what is occurring below. God’s Word most definitely contains solutions to every problem ever. When we are armed with Scriptures, we are literally sitting on God’s high tower. We see the enemy’s tactics and can turn to Scripture (or recall it) to help us. How personal is that??? Our God gives us the advantage over the enemy. No other “god” can do that!
  • “my refuge” – When I think of a refuge, I immediately think of a cave, a shelter if you will. If I was on a beach and a terrible storm came in, I would seek shelter in a nearby cave until the storm passed. Think of this for a moment. God can be your personal refuge in life’s storms. I think of Him leaning down, picking me up and holding me securely in His arms, just like the good Father He is. I can seek and find refuge in His Word when I am surrounded by hurt. I find comfort in the precious pages of Psalms. Now that’s a personal God. There is no book ever written that can provide this!
  • “my saviour; thou savest me from violence” – My Saviour, Jesus Christ, does provide me with salvation which in turn saves me from an eternity in Hell! It doesn’t get more personal than that! He is MY Saviour – the One who paid the price for all my sins so that I would not have to pay for them.

If today’s devotional has prompted thoughts about your personal relationship, that’s good! God should be personal in your life. He should be the first one you turn to when you are in need of anything! If you’re struggling with that, then check your head and heart knowledge. Is God simply someone you know about and has been a part of your upbringing? Or is He someone you have come to know through salvation? When a person comes to salvation, there is a change. Christ becomes a part of your everyday life and not just on Sundays. If you have discovered that He is not part of your everyday life, make Him. Proverbs 3:5-6  Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding.  (6)  In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.

If you are reading this and find yourself in the midst of living without a job, I pray this post encourages your heart! But do you know that God is with you, Christian? He has not abandoned you – He is with you through His Holy Spirit! He never leaves you nor will He forsake you in this time of hardship! (Hebrews 13:5)

I find it so personal when I read that one of God’s names is Emmanuel (or Immanuel in the King James Bible). The Hebrew word literally means:

עִמָּנוּאֵל
‛immânû’êl
im-maw-noo-ale’
From H5973 and H410 with suffix pronoun inserted; with us (is) God;

Christ’s title, Emmanuel, is most commonly used at Christmas time to describe His birth. However, the meaning “God with us” goes so much deeper. As I see the news of the unemployment lines getting longer, I can only imagine the distraught and discouraged minds! Worrying over bills and putting food on the table is something that hits everyone. But is it what Christians should be worrying over? Emmanuel is with us. In a previous post about El Roi, we learned that this is Hebrew for “God sees us.” Today, we learn that God is with us. Nothing gets passed Him, Reader. God put specific titles for His name so that we would learn about His character.

God knows your difficulties and He knows exactly what you need, even before you realize that you need it. He is working out the details in the background whether you see that or not. Isaiah 46:10 proves to us that He knows the beginning to the end. Therefore, He will not place you in a situation where it will cause you to sin. Absolutely not! You can trust Him to do the right things in your life! Today’s Scripture passage in Proverbs is so apropos!

As a believer, trust that God sees what you are going through and is present to help you to go through this trial of unemployment. He just asks that you trust Him and to acknowledge that you are not going to lean on your own personal understanding of the circumstances. Allow God to work… He won’t let you down. I think of David as he was struggling with Saul trying to kill him. He wrote many Psalms as he struggled with life and death situations. Spend time in Psalms and encourage your heart! Take a look at what David wrote when he was delivered out of the hands of his enemies and the hand of Saul:

Your trial is no less important to God than was David’s trials. The same God that delivered David will help you with finding work. One of my favorite verses depicting how much we mean to Him is:

Mat 6:26  Behold the fowls of the air: for they sow not, neither do they reap, nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feedeth them. Are ye not much better than they?

Christian, be encouraged because your Father is there and He will help you. Trust in Him and allow Him to open or close doors; allow Him to work, and don’t jump the gun. He loves you (John 3:16); He sees you (El Roi); He is with you (Emmanuel). How more personal can it get? What a wonderfully compassionate God we serve!!!

If you are not truly born-again, you cannot experience the peace that God brings. There is coming a time when it will be too late for you to repent and be saved.
