The Anchored Soul – Day 42 – The Sacred Power of Being Still

Our daily lives are governed by a constant pressure to move, produce, and respond. From early morning until late at night, our attention is demanded by endless tasks, endless streams of information, and the expectation that quietness is synonymous with unproductiveness. We have become accustomed to living in the middle of noise, so much so that true silence can feel unfamiliar, uncomfortable, or even wasteful to our restless spirits.

Yet, God frequently does His deepest work in our lives in the quiet. When Elijah stood upon the mountain waiting for a word from the Lord, God was not in the strong wind, nor in the earthquake, nor in the fire, but in a still, small voice. If we are constantly surrounding ourselves with distraction, we risk missing the gentle promptings of the Holy Spirit. Spiritual stillness is not laziness; it is an act of trust and holy discipline.

1 Kings 19:12 And after the earthquake a fire; but the LORD was not in the fire: and after the fire a still small voice.

To “be still” in the original context of the Psalm implies letting go, ceasing our striving, and releasing our desperate grip on control. [Hebrew word “raphah, H7503] It is an acknowledgment that the universe does not rely on our frantic activity to keep spinning. When we deliberately set aside time to quiet our minds and step away from the relentless demands of the day, we make room to recognize God’s presence and remember who He is. Many believers begin their day in quiet prayer, asking God for strength and guidance for whatever lies ahead. Others prefer the quiet evening, unwinding in His presence to reflect on the day’s journey. Regardless of when you meet with Him, the heart of quiet time remains the same: stepping away from the noise to be still before the Lord.

Today, choose to step back from the noise, even if only for a few moments. Put away the distractions, quiet the mental list of obligations, and yield your focus entirely to the Father. In that space of intentional stillness, allow Him to restore your weary soul and align your heart with His perfect will. This is where the still small voice can be heard.

Prayer:

Lord God, my days are often filled with commotion and my spirit feels hurried. Teach me the discipline of holy stillness. Help me to lay down my strive, to turn off the competing voices of this world, and to rest quietly in Your presence, knowing that You alone are God. Amen.

Do Not Be Afraid – Day 10

Anyone who has seen the movie “The Ten Commandments” remembers the iconic scene when the Jews were led through the dry bed of the Red Sea. God tells Moses not to be afraid and to stand still! This powerful moment serves as a testament to faith and God’s intervention in times of danger. The tremendous weight of responsibility rested on Moses’ shoulders as he was about to witness firsthand what God could do through him, knowing that the journey ahead was not just a physical escape from oppression but a profound leap of faith into the unknown, leading this vast number of people to freedom and a new beginning. If you take a moment to meditate on the graphic, picture yourself as one of them, filled with uncertainty and awe as towering walls of water loom on either side. It must have been a heart-pounding experience, mixed with fear and hope.

One can hardly read a book effectively if he is busy doing something else. It takes sitting in your favorite chair surrounded by peace and quiet, where the distractions of the outside world fade away. In this serene environment, one can truly immerse himself in the narrative, understanding each word and emotion that the author has written. Now he can really dive into the story line and understand what he’s reading, allowing the characters and plots to unfold vividly in his imagination. God encourages us to be still, to be stopped from the hustle and bustle of the day, urging us to carve out a time of solitude to reconnect with our thoughts of Him and read His Word. This is when we can see and hear God at work, revealing truths that might otherwise remain hidden in the noise of our daily lives, helping us to reflect and find deeper meanings in both our readings and our experiences.

It is when we give pause that we can see God not only working in our lives, but we hear His still small voice whispering to our hearts, “Do not be afraid”! If we are busy, consumed by the chaos of our daily routines, we cannot fully experience His presence. When we are afraid or filled with anxiety, how can we overcome those feelings without plunging ourselves deeply into God’s Word, and earnestly seeking His peace and guidance? Maybe you are reading your Bible every day, diligently trying to absorb the words written on the pages, but if you simply walk away without reflecting, what have you truly gained? Take a moment to stop, be still, and think on what you’ve just read; let those scriptures echo within you. Let the Lord’s still small voice reveal Himself to you, guiding you through the noise of the world and giving light to your path ahead. This will remove your fear and anxiety, if you take the time. As you meditate on His Word, you will begin to see how it shapes your thoughts, influences your actions, and brings you closer to God’s purpose for your life. Remember, it is in those quiet moments of reflection that we can truly encounter the depth of His love and wisdom.
