~2 Corinthians 1:3-4, Blessed be God, even the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies, and the God of all comfort; (3) Who comforteth us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort them which are in any trouble, by the comfort wherewith we ourselves are comforted of God. (4)

When you see “a bit” of hope, GOD is whispering to you.

Why art thou cast down, O my soul? and why art thou disquieted within me? hope thou in God: for I shall yet praise him, who is the health of my countenance, and my God. ~Psalm 42:11

It’s Up To You!

Although this is from a parent to his child, it is packed with a lesson! I hope you enjoy it!

I gave you life, but I cannot live it for you.

I can teach you things, but I cannot make you learn.

I can give you directions, but I cannot always be there to lead you.

I can allow you freedom, but I cannot account for it.

I can take you to church, but I cannot make you believe.

I can teach you right from wrong, but I cannot decide for you.

I can give you love, but I cannot force it upon you.

I can teach you to be a friend, but I cannot make you one.

I can teach you to share, but I cannot make you unselfish.

I can teach you respect, but I cannot force you to show honor.

I can grieve about your report card but I canot make you study, I can advise you about friends, but I cannot choose them for you.

I can teach you about sex and the facts of life, but I cannot decide for you.

I can tell you about drinking, but I cannot say “no” for you.

I can warn you about drugs, but I cannot prevent you from using them.

I can teach you about goals and dreams, but I cannot achieve them for you.

I can teach you kindness, but I cannot force you to be kind.

I can warn you about sin, but I cannot make your morals.

I can love you as a [daughter] son, but I cannot place you in God’s family.

I can pray for you and your future, but I cannot make you walk with God.

I can tell you how to live, but I cannot give you eternal life.

It’s all up to you!

A Beautiful Explanation of Death

Some may think that this type of post should not be posted here on my blog. But I beg to differ – in fact, I believe it is exactly what needs to be posted. Not everyone with cancer is in Stage 1. There are some who are reading that are in Stage 4 and have nothing to look forward to but death. Surely there is more to life than just dying.

Yes, there is more to life – there is eternal life. To the born-again Christian, we can look forward to being with the Lord, Jesus Christ. What does Heaven look like? What can we expect there? The Bible has a few verses that speak about what Heaven will look like but no one knows for sure. This is a beautiful depiction of what to expect. I hope you enjoy!

A sick man turned to his doctor as he was preparing to leave the examination room and said, “Doctor, I am afraid to die. Tell me what lies on the other side.”

Very quietly, the doctor said, “I don’t know.”

“You don’t know? You, a Christian man, do not know what is on the other side?”

The doctor was holding the handle of the door; on the other side came a sound of scratching and whining, and as he opened the door, a dog sprang into the room, and leaped on him with an eager show of gladness.

Turning to the patient, the doctor said, “Did you notice my dog? He’s never been in this room before. He didn’t know what was inside. He knew nothing except that his master was here, and when the door opened, he sprang in without fear. I know little of what is on the other side of death, but I do know one thing, I know my Master is there and that is enough.”

Mini-Manna for Little Lambs – Day 22 – Joy

Coloring/Teaching

Let’s color this picture! What are the children doing?

I’ve Got the Joy

I’ve got the joy, joy, joy, joy
down in my heart, (where?)
down in my heart, (where?),
down in my heart,
I’ve got the joy, joy, joy, joy
down in my heart, (where?)
down in my heart to stay.

Bible Time

(Act 13:52)  And the disciples were filled with joy, and with the Holy Ghost.

Story

Katie was sad because her best friend, Suzie, moved away.  All she could think about was how much fun she and Suzie had together!  The more she thought about Suzie, the sadder she got.  Her Daddy came into her room and said, “Why are you so sad, Katie?”

“Suzie is gone, Daddy!  I don’t have anyone to play with!”

“Awww,” said Daddy.  “What about Mary?  Why don’t you call her and ask her if she wants to play with you?  I’m sure she misses Suzie, too!” (make a sad face)

“Oh thank you, Daddy!  That’s a great idea!  I didn’t think Mary would be sad, too.  Maybe I can make Mary happy and Mary can make me happy at the same time!” exclaimed Katie.  (clap your hands and smile)

When we are sad, we can always get our joy back by being nice to someone else.  That is what Jesus would do.  Katie did the right thing, didn’t she?  (Nod your head yes.)  She knew that if she was a blessing to Mary, it would give Katie a blessing, too!

Dear God…
Please help me to be a blessing to someone else that needs it.  If someone is sad, help me to be nice to them and help them to be happy again.  Amen!

Psalm 23 According to Me

~Psalm 23:1 The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want.

As a shepherd provides the sheep’s food, water, shelter and all of its needs, so will our Shepherd provide all that we need. We will never lack anything that is necessary for us.

~Psalm 23:2 He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters.

As the shepherd knows when his sheep need to rest or they need water, so does our Sheperd know our needs. He not only will see to it that we get peaceful rest in His Word, but He will provide that water and food from His Word.

~Psalm 23:3 He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name’s sake.

Our Shepherd promises to restore our spirits when we am spiritually weary. When rough days and dark clouds loom in the distance, we can rest in His promise that He will carry us through it all. Because we are His, He will lead us as we seek to be more like Him. When we diligently seek Him in our day, He promises to make the path clear so we can reflect His righteousness in our walk.

~Psalm 23:4 Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.

Our Shepherd not only promises to be with us when we are close to death, but He is there during the whole path leading to death. We will not fear this cancer trial because He is there right beside us. As the shepherd guides his flock with his staff and disciplines the wayward sheep with his rod, so our Shepherd guides us with His Word. He chastises us with His rod when we refuse to walk down the righteous path. All that our Shepherd does is for our good and for our benefit. It is His guidance and direction that cause us to be more like Him.

~Psalm 23:5 Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over.

Our Shepherd has everything under control. We lack nothing – in fact, we have everything that is necessary in my life. We are truly blessed beyond measure.

~Psalm 23:6 Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the LORD for ever.

The born-again child of God receives God’s goodness and His mercy and a sound promise to dwell with Him for ever! Glory!

No matter how many times we read this Psalm, each time brings a fresh new blessing from the God of Glory!

For the Weary – Day 3 – Burnout

Do you find yourself feeling as though all the work you are doing for the Lord just does not seem appreciated – or even of benefit? You strive to help others but they just ignore your help. People take advantage of you and you feel used. You seem to have reached your limit and you are weary of well doing. You are not alone, dear Christian. We all reach that point at some time or another. It is important that you recognize the signs and nip them in the bud before the weariness overtakes you.

Noah Webster defines weary as:

WEARY, a.

1. Having the strength much exhausted by toil or violent exertion; tired; fatigued. [It should be observed however that this word expresses less than tired, particularly when applied to a beast; as a tired horse. It is followed by of, before the cause of fatigue; as, to be weary of marching; to be weary of reaping; to be weary of study.]

2. Having the patience exhausted, or the mind yielding to discouragement. He was weary of asking for redress.

3. Causing weariness; tiresome; as a weary way; a weary life.

If you were sick, you would take a day off from work and rest, wouldn’t you? Weariness can “snow ball” if it is not dealt with right away. It is at this time that we must break away from the hustle and bustle of this world and find a quiet place with the Lord. We need to refuel ourselves and get ourselves back on track.

Rewards

I don’t know about you, but I feel most rewarded when I know that God is using me. I may not see the fruit of my labor but the Holy Spirit lets me know through His Word or His still small voice that I am being used to help someone else.

~Psalm 61:2 From the end of the earth will I cry unto thee, when my heart is overwhelmed: lead me to the rock that is higher than I.

Remedy

So what’s the remedy? Take a personal day off work and get away to a quiet place that you absolutely love. If you can’t afford an entire day, then purpose in your heart to get up early and take a few extra hours alone with God! Don’t just go into your study or bedroom. Get away from your familiar surroundings. A botanical gardens is always nice – or the woods – or a pond or lake where the ducks are swimming – or even at the top of a mountain where the vista takes your breath away! Take your Bible with you and have a “sit down” with God. It should be different from your usual prayer time and devotional time with Him. It should be special – just as special as the dates with your spouse!

Just as our cars need maintenance and fuel regularly, so do we! Daily Bible reading is good but this kind of “sit down” with the Lord is needful at times. It is especially needful if you are in full-time ministry and are on the go all the time. Those in full-time ministry are always so busy working for the Lord that everyone thinks they should always be on a “spiritual high” for their well doing. But that is not the case. Those are the people who get weary and must make time with their God and have a spiritual retreat regularly.

Retreats in the Word

Spiritual retreats seemed to be the center of David’s life, in my opinion. He knew where to get his encouragement, didn’t he? Psalms is filled with beautiful verses depicting David’s needs being met because he sought his God!

~Psalm 119:15 I will meditate in thy precepts, and have respect unto thy ways.

David took the time to meditate in God’s Word. Sometimes an outside stimulous can enhance our meditation time. For me, it is a quiet place in the woods! I hear the crickets and birds – the sound of a babbling brook – the breeze blowing through the trees and hearing the leaves rustle. All these things draw me closer to my Creator!

My friend, you are not alone in your work for the Master! He will be coming soon and our work here will be finished. Don’t grow weary. Encourage your spirit in the Word and keep on keepin’ on!

Beginning Today…

Beginning today I will no longer worry about yesterday. It is in the past and the past will never change. Only I can change by choosing to do so.

Beginning today I will no longer worry about tomorrow. Tomorrow will always be there, waiting for me to make the most of it.
But I cannot make the most of tomorrow without first making the most of today.

Beginning today I will look in the mirror and I will see a person worthy of my respect and admiration. This capable person looking back at me is someone I enjoy spending time with and someone I would like to get to know better.

Beginning today I will cherish each moment of my life. I value this gift bestowed upon me in this world and I will unselfishly share this gift with others. I will use this gift to enhance the lives of others.

Beginning today I will take a moment to step off the beaten path and to revel in the mysteries I encounter. I will face challenges with courage and determination. I will overcome what barriers there may be which hinder my quest for growth and self-improvement.

Beginning today I will take life one day at a time, one step at a time. Discouragement will not be allowed to taint my positive self-image, my desire to succeed or my capacity to love.

Beginning today I walk with renewed faith in human kindness. Regardless of what has gone before, I believe there is hope for a brighter and better future.

Beginning today I will open my mind and my heart. I will welcome new experiences. I will meet new people. I will not expect perfection from myself nor anyone else: perfection does not exist in an imperfect world. But I will applaud the attempt to overcome human foibles.

Beginning today I am responsible for my own happiness and I will do things that make me happy . . . admire the beautiful wonders of nature, listen to my favorite music, pet a kitten or a puppy, soak in a bubble bath . . . pleasure can be found in the most simple of gestures.

Beginning today I will learn something new; I will try something different; I will savor all the various flavors life has to offer. I will change what I can and the rest I will let go. I will strive to become the best me I can possibly be.

Beginning today. And every day.

God is Good!

As you read this story, compare it with how you are viewing your trials. Are you like the man full of faith in His God knowing that this trial is for your ultimate good? Or are you quick to blame God for it all? If you are the latter, I pray this will speak to your heart.

There were two men having a trip together. They brought a donkey to carry their things, a torch to brighten the road at night and a chicken, which was a donkey’s friend. The chicken sat on the donkey’s head during the trip.

One of the two men was a born-again Christian, while the other one was the unbeliever. Along the way, they were having a conversation about God.

“God is so good,” said the first one.

“Well, we’ll see if you still think the same during this trip,” said the second.

When the nightfall came, they reached a small village and they were looking for a place to sleep. They had been looking everywhere yet no one wanted to take them in. So they continued on their trip out of the village and decided to sleep there.

“I thought you said that God is good,” said the second one cynically.

“God has decided that this is the best place for us to sleep,” explained the first one.

They put up their tent under a big tree beside the road to the village and tied the donkey five metres away from their tent. As they lit the torch, they heard some noise. A lion attacked the donkey, dragged it away and ate it. They promptly climbed the tree to survive.

“You still think that God is good?” asked the second man angrily.

“Hadn’t the lion killed the donkey, we would have been eaten. God is good,” said the first.

A moment later, they heard their chicken cackling. From the tree, they could see that a big cat attacked the chicken and dragged it away.

Before the second man said anything, the first man said,

“The sound of the chicken saved us once again. God is good.”

A few minutes later, a big wind blew out their torch – the only thing that was keeping them warm. Once again, the second man mocked his friend.

“Apparently, God’s kindness has been working on us all night,” he said.

The first man said nothing.

The next morning, the two men went back to the village for food only to discover that robbers had attacked and robbed the entire village!

Knowing that, the first man said,

“Now it’s clear. God is really good. Had we spent the night at the village, we would have been robbed. Had the wind not blown out our torch, the robbers, who passed the street near us, would have seen us and robbed us too. It is so clear that God is good.”

Is the cross you wear too heavy to bear?

Complainingly I told myself, “this cross is too heavy to wear.”
And I wondered discontentedly why God gave it to me to bear.

And I looked with envy at others whose crosses seemed lighter than mine
And wished that I could change my cross for one of a lighter design.

And then, in a dream, I beheld the cross I impulsively wanted to wear,
It was fashioned of pearls and diamonds and gems that were precious and rare.

And when I hung it around my neck the weight of the jewels and the gold
Was much too heavy and cumbersome for my small, slender neck to hold

So I tossed it aside and before my eyes was a cross of rose-red flowers
And I said with delight as I put it on, “this cross I can wear for hours”

For it was so dainty and fragile, so lovely and light and thin,
But I had forgotten about the thorns that started to pierce my skin

And then in my dream I saw “my cross,” rugged and old and plain,
That clumsy old cross I had looked upon with discontented disdain.

And at last I knew that God had made this “special cross for me,”
For God in His great wisdom knew what I before could not see,

That often the loveliest crosses are the heaviest crosses to bear,
For only God is wise enough to choose the cross we can wear.

So never complain about YOUR CROSS, for your cross has been blessed,
God made it JUST FOR YOU to wear and remember, GOD KNOWS BEST

For the Weary – Day 2 – Looking

It is vital for a Christian to protect his eyes or he will find himself growing weary in his walk. I’m not talking about protecting one’s eyes from things we should not be looking at (like unsightly billboards) but from looking at our life’s circumstances.

It is when we look at our own circumstances that we become dissatisfied and we then begin to covet. We become jealous of others who are not stricken with the illness that we have. We hear ourselves saying, “Others cannot know what I am going through because they do not have the problems that I have.” The moment we take our eyes off the Lord and place them on our problems, we will grow weary.

~1 John 2:16 For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world.

Did you notice the reference to the “lust of the eyes”? You may wonder what this has to do with the topic of growing weary. When we begin to look at what we feel is wrong in our lives, it is very easy to become covetous. Ole slew foot will be sure to kick you when you’re down, my friend! He will make sure that the grass you are looking at on the other side of that fence will appear to be a whole lot greener than your own! You will become resentful of your lot in life and you will desire what others have. You may not covet their belongings, but you will resent your own life for not being like theirs – what appears to be care free.

Why do I have to be the one who is sick when Jean Jones seems to have everything in life?” This statement is a direct result of the lust of the eyes. This person would not notice that Jean seems to have everything in life if she had not looked at her own circumstances and compared them with Jean’s.

Changing Our View

It is critical that we change how we view our circumstances. God’s Word teaches us how to do this. Use your eyes to focus on someone else’s needs rather than your own. Allow God to let you be a blessing to someone else. God can see when a need must be met and if you allow Him, He will use you to meet a need. Have you heard the statement, “God wants you to be Jesus with skin on”? We have the Holy Spirit residing within us and His goal is to mold us into the image of Jesus Christ. Allow the Holy Spirit to use you – each time you do, you become more and more like Christ.  When we yield ourselves to the Spirit’s will, God is glorified.

God would be glorified if He healed you right now or took away whatever trial you are experiencing.  However, God may receive more glory by allowing you to go through the trial to help others.

So, where should you start? Look within your own church family. Look for those who are lonely or hurting. Often times they are the ones who are quiet and probably do not get the opportunity to fellowship with others very much. They are sadly left out for one reason or another.

~1 John 4:7-12, Beloved, let us love one another: for love is of God; and every one that loveth is born of God, and knoweth God. He that loveth not knoweth not God; for God is love. In this was manifested the love of God toward us, because that God sent his only begotten Son into the world, that we might live through him. Herein is love, not that we loved God, but that he loved us, and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins. Beloved, if God so loved us, we ought also to love one another. No man hath seen God at any time. If we love one another, God dwelleth in us, and his love is perfected in us.

Our church has a membership directory and it is a good place to start. Take your church’s directory and write little facts you know beside each member. For example: Jane Smith has chemo from June through August; John Green is a recent widower and has no family living nearby; Mary is caring for her invalid mother; Susie’s husband is not saved and she does not get much Christian fellowship with other ladies, etc. If you personally do not know what the needs are, call your Pastor or the church secretary. They are usually the first to know when a need has arisen in the church.  You can also glean from the weekly prayer bulletin.

Everyone has a need in their lives, my friend. Everyone! Use your eyes to see what these needs are and then focus your efforts on meeting those needs using the talents God has given to you.

Use your talents

Every one of us has a talent given by God above.  You may not view your abilities as a talent given from God but they truly are.  As each part of our body is needed to make a fully-functional human body, so is each talent and ability given to make Christ’s fully-functional precious church! We can’t all be good cooks because we also need someone to work on the Pastor’s computer when it goes down.

Are you a good cook? Make some extra food at your next meal for someone who could use a “touch” from the Lord. Notice I said, “from the Lord”?  Your talents are to be used for the glory of God, not yours.  Be that “Jesus with skin on” and let the Lord meet their need through you.  When you are a humble and willing servant, you accomplish the Master’s tasks no matter if you receive a thank you or not.  Your joy will come from being willing to be used of God.

If you cannot deliver the meal yourself, ask someone else in your church if they would like to do so. Some people don’t like to cook but they don’t mind delivering a meal to someone in need. God will put the two of you together and you’ll make a good team.  Working together strives to make your church family a well rounded, fully-functional family.  Each one using his/her talent for the Lord!  Maybe someone else likes to make cards and has one that could be included with the meal.  As well, maybe someone else has a beautiful flower garden and would like to include a bouquet of flowers.  Do you see how God can be glorified through your abilities?  The meal deliverer can also keep an eye open for things that may need to be done in the dear Saint’s home.  For example, as she sits and chats for a bit, she can see if housework is needed.  When can let the church secretary know this and the house cleaning can be assigned to ladies who love to do this.  Or if a shutter is falling off a window, or any other fix-it project, etc.  She can call the Pastor and let him know so he can assign it to one of his men.

Maybe you are home bound yourself but want to help others? Pick up the phone and call someone in need of an encouraging word. You would be amazed how much of a blessing it is for a dear bed ridden Saint to receive a call just because someone cared about them! Even if it is just to say that the Lord had laid them on your heart and you wanted to say, “Hi.”

Do you like to write? Send a card or just a short note. I have found that God will usually cause someone’s name in my church directory to “pop out” at me. This person will come up to me later and tell me that my note was exactly what they needed that day.  Although I feel great that my card was appreciated, I feel wonderful that the Lord met the need of that dear Saint.

Can you spare a few hours to do someone’s grocery shopping who is home bound? Do you like to clean? How about offering to clean a new Momma’s house because her hands are full with a colicky baby. Do you love to play the piano? Go to a nursing home and play for the elderly. When my husband was in the hospital for his cancer surgery, a dear lady would go up and down the hallways playing her harp!  You could hear sound as she rounded the corner and the melodies of the harp calmed the heart!  Now here is a lady who was using her talent to be a blessing to those who are bed ridden.  Was she a Christian?  I don’t know.  But what a blessing she was to this lady as I sat there watching my beloved sleeping.  It was as if the Lord was reaching out to me and calming my weary spirit!

What do you do best? What gifts has God given to you? The possibilities are endless! Everyone has a talent that God has blessed them with. Use your talent for the glory of God!

results

When we are yielded to the Holy Spirit’s guidance, He is busy at work in the lives of others at the same time that He is directing us. He will use us to minister to those in need. So let’s be diligent. When we are serving God in this capacity, He will bless us and will help us not to grow weary in our Christian walk. It will amaze you how much your outlook on your own circumstances will change for the good even though your own trials have not improved!

I pray that today’s devotional has been a blessing to you.  I have often felt as though God couldn’t use me.  My abilities are writing and being an encourager – whether that is here on this blog or in a note card or phone call, I can use them.  This allows the God of Glory to reveal Himself to those in need!

Won’t you be yielded today?  It is wonderful to know that you are needed by God.  It is wonderful to know that despite your physical impairments, you can still be used to encourage the life of another!  My spiritual mother has fibromyalgia.  Despite the excruciating pain that she suffers 24/7, she ministers to the lost by sending out devotionals, tracts, Bibles, etc.  She ministers to the sick by sending care packages with music, literature, etc.  This is her ministry despite her circumstances.  She may not see reward this side of Heaven, but once she goes home to be with the Lord, she will meet all those Saints whose lives she has touched.

Let God use you, my friend.  Do not be weary in well doing!  Continue for the cause of Christ.  Look at what He suffered through yet He continued.  He knew what He would have to go through, yet He continued.  Press on for the glory of God!  God will combine your abilities with those in your church family and together He will use your talents for His ultimate glory!
